The Major Waters of the Lake District Print

A brooding view up Wasdale
Wast Water
When Peter Burgess asked for suggestions for a future OFC survey I thought of the major waters of the Lake District, the limit of twelve for survey purposes would be,  I naively believed, of no great obstacle.

Some of the valley lakes which would be included chose themselves, Windermere and Ullswater for example. Finding a way to include all the ones that people would expect and at the same time having a valid reason for their inclusion proved rather difficult. A check on surface areas revealed a couple of surprises, Grasmere and Rydal Water combined measure up at 0.93 sq.km, Esthwaite Water, a beautiful place but surely without the romance and history Grasmere commands, measures 1.1sq.km.

The elusive Kentmere Tarn once formed a much larger valley lake

By allowing Buttermere and Loweswater to be combined with Crummock Water, geographically logical I think, others may disagree, a surface area of 4.1sq.km comfortably secures a place in the survey.

Your favourite valley lakes:

Which one is your favourite? Do you have a specific reason? Please vote for your favourite in the OFC's online poll but remember it is only a bit of fun! Perhaps if anyone has a special reason for their choice they might write a few words for inclusion on the website and which could be added here.

"I love the Lake District. Went for first time 20 months ago. OFC website is the best thing I've found, along with all the members' sites. My kids at school log on every morning as well." Sue Sullivan
