Twenty years ago many of us would slip on a wool jumper knitted for us by our grandma. If you were unlucky when the arms wore thin your mother might stitch on two leather patches. Despite the stereotype, this geography teacher would like his gear to be a bit more up-to-date although he does own some very nice Icelandic knitwear!
Nowadays, although the benefits of wool are still identified, its practicality when wet is now identified as a negative factor. It was recently found that the average UK citizen owns at least three fleeces. The fleece is the new man on the block! Fleeces mimick the property of wool but at the same time have better durability and, as stated in other sections, low moisture absorption. A good mid-layer is close fitting but gives an unrestrictive fit with closures (usually elasticated fit) around wrists and waist. |
