Helmut's Big Walk May 2008 - Day 2 Print

My job on day 2 of Helmut's big walk (last Thursday) was to navigate him from St Johns in the Vale Church to the top of Bleaberry Fell.  We first took a stroll, without sacs, to Tewet Tarn and up the minor peak of Low Rigg.  Then back to the church for a look inside and then it was on with Helmut's big pack (he was camping from thereon) and up the short, steep climb to High Rigg summit.  Yet another good weather day with excellent views.

Next we walked south along High Rigg for less that quarter of a mile before descending west into the Naddle valley, crossing the A 591 near Rough How Bridge and up the track to Shoulthwaite Farm.  Next it was into the forest to emerge at the weir across Shoulthwaite Gill.  Then a steep ascent to the right of Goat Crag (a new route for me and yet another Unfrequented Wainwright Route) which brought us to the boggy heather covered moorland rising gently to the summit of Bleaberry Fell at 11 am.

There we parted - Helmut to High Seat, High Tove and eventually to the Langdale Pikes which could just be seen 10 miles or so away!  I skirted north of Dodd Crag and eventually joined the road at Causeway Foot Farm opposite Dale Bottom from where a short walk brought me back to my car by St Johns in the Vale church.

"I love the Lake District. Went for first time 20 months ago. OFC website is the best thing I've found, along with all the members' sites. My kids at school log on every morning as well." Sue Sullivan
