Bill Birkett signs the winner's copy of Himalaya Lucky OFC members Roger & Ann Hiley were drawn at random from the 15 correct entries by none other than Bill Birkett on Saturday 19th January at his home. They win a copy of Michael Palin's Himalaya book signed by Bill Birkett.Andrew Mason was second out of the hat and wins the magnetic climber toy. Stuart Willis was the third person drawn and wins a handy set of OFC information cards to help him on the fells. My thanks to all those members who participated, and good luck to all members next time round. Watch this space to win a copy of Bill Birkett's Complete Lakeland Fells signed by Bill Birkett in the next OFC competition. Below you will find the correct answers and solution. Start at the 'wind in the wood' waterfall(1) and head north west. After a couple of miles you come to a place where a small church crosses a fence(2). Not long after, as long as you have not been naughty the two castle jails are reached with the lofty Civil War weapons belonging to the Long Valley above(3). Heading south now, the diffluence col of a great glacier is crossed to the blue lake(4) so solitary to abide. Once more another fortified place on a hill is passed as the route travels west to the sea. Sounding like one of the big five, game animals of Africa who doesn't know the answer on Mastermind(5), travel west to a pre-1973 boundary marker. Passing two more animal body parts in the valley the next route passes over something sounding like a cub scout's worst nightmare when tying a double hitch(6). In the footsteps of Romans, a Latin encampment is passed(7) before descending to cross the pont of Elisabeth's 1977 celebration(8). The route passes along a wonderful valley before getting to the hamlet where someone left one part of their footwear(9).

Driving along the A13 recently, I noticed familiar mountain names emblazened on the side of a car. On return home I was keen to discover the amazing project being advertised by the vehicle and the equally incredible expedition being undertaken by a group of scuba divers in order to raise funds for Help for Heroes. Find out more about this expedition from Shane Farnham and then why not consider their worthy cause in support of 'Help for Heroes'. |

The continued good fortune of being in Cumbria along with good weather, continued again on this outing, as a few OFC again gathered in Coniston. My intentions were not to stay in Coniston, but with £100 to give to Coniston MRT it seemed logical to overnight in Coniston for two nights in order to make the best of my time. Robbie K had already contacted me to say he would join me and Lorraine also hinted at a walk out. However, as with all things, matters can change but I was mighty pleased when those who said they would walk did so. Along with myself, Robbie, Lorraine and even Steven P joined me on the long ascent of the Walna Scar Road from the village. It really was a magic morning! |
