OFC United at the Buck Inn On the appointed day – Saturday 17th April 2010 – thirteen OFC members gathered at Buckden car park and we made our way to the village store tearoom for a cuppa before starting the walk. Gary and Sheena, and Tim the dog, had already had a short stroll to test an injury, still painful so they opted out but their presence for the cuppa was very welcome.

Barrie and Liz had Sam’s age to consider so they took an alternate route to Scar House, hoping to meet up with us a little later. So nine of us set off up the steep sided Buckden Gill, a series of waterfalls and cascades in Buckden Beck soon got the cameras clicking, a couple of scrambling sections up the rocks were enjoyed.

My thanks too to Dave for organising this walk. A great day from start to finish. Jo Hall.

A short break allowed some exploration of the disused lead mine at the top of the Gill and then a steep climb towards Buckden Gavel led us to the summit of Buckden Pike (702m). As well as the usual trig point and cairn there is a directional viewfinder, a pole in the ground with holes drilled through it and labelled as to which hill can be seen through the hole. Very interesting, and some time was spent sampling the views before we climbed the stile and took lunch in the shelter of the wall, the wind was strong and quite cool.

The descent to Cray was thankfully not as boggy as I had feared and we soon reached Cray Gill Beck and the stepping stones and beautiful section of the walk above Todd’s Wood and Hubberholme Wood. Reaching Scar House, Josie and Ann took a slightly shorter route back and retired for afternoon tea at the Buck Inn where we would meat up later.

A very big thanks to Dave for organising a great day in the Yorkshire Dales. Neil Haslewood.

The remainder of the group headed across lovely pastures and woodland before the drop down to Yockenthwaite and the Dales Way path besides the River Wharfe. It was then a delightful stroll to Hubberholme, and a visit to the historic church for some while others were trying to identify different birds by the river.

A short tarmac stretch preceded the final ¾ mile riverbank path and our return to Buckden. Around 9 miles for the full walk had been completed under blue skies and wonderful conditions. With the sheep and lambs still quartered in the lower fields Harry and Bethan, Jodie and Amber were occasionally required to be on leads but they had plenty of freedom too and appeared to enjoy themselves, not least in the becks and rivers!

Hello OFC'ers, this isn't the first report from Buckden. It's a big thank you message to DD for an excellent day out, really well thought out and organised. Well Done, Dave!  Richard Ratcliffe.

A reunion with the rest of the party was soon made at the Buck Inn and after a quick drink we took our places at our pre-booked table and enjoyed a hearty meal and more conversation.

My thanks to Roger and Ann Hiley, Jo Hall, Steve Procter, Lorraine Barks, Neil Haslewood, Richard Ratcliffe, Liz Lemal, Barrie Fearnley, Gary and Sheena Richardson and last but not least Josie, a wonderful day in great company.

Dow Crag by South Rake
Read more... The continued good fortune of being in Cumbria along with good weather, continued again on this outing, as a few OFC again gathered in Coniston.  My intentions were not to stay in Coniston, but with £100 to give to Coniston MRT it seemed logical to overnight in Coniston for two nights in order to make the best of my time.  Robbie K had already contacted me to say he would join me and Lorraine also hinted at a walk out.  However, as with all things, matters can change but I was mighty pleased when those who said they would walk did so.  Along with myself, Robbie, Lorraine and even Steven P joined me on the long ascent of the Walna Scar Road from the village.  It really was a magic morning!

Remembrance Sunday 2011
Read more... This year I planned to be in Coniston over the Remembrance weekend.  Great Gable, for many years my object of ascent on this iconic Sunday seemed a distant peak and so for practical purposes I set my sights on the summit of Great Carrs where I had visited the Halifax memorial on occasions before.  With hindsight it turned out I was glad to ascend the mountain this day with four fellow OFc members, for although Great Gable was again graced by a large throng for the FRCC service, the top of Great Carrs saw but 9 to remember 8 brave men of the Canadian Royal Air Force who died there in October 1944.
