Jo and fellow OFC members on Raise summit [Roger Hiley]Congratulations to OFC member Jo Hall for achieving all 214 Wainwrights.

Thank you all so much for your good wishes following Roger and Ann's announcement that I completed my round of Wainwrights on Saturday.  I have just got back home after spending the weekend in the Lakes, and I can't get over the number of lovely messages on the board from so many of you!  I am very touched!

As you will have seen from Roger's photos, the weather was somewhat less than perfect, but the great company more than made up for the mist, rain, wind ... you name it!  All the folk who accompanied me on my last walk are OFC members; I joined the OFC in 2005 and have made some wonderful friends as a result.  In fact, I am sure I would never have finished the Wainwrights without them!  My sincere thanks to all (this is beginning to sound like an Oscar winner's speech... sorry!).

As for finishing on Raise .... well, I'm afraid I haven't been very methodical in planning my routes over the years, mainly because when I first started walking in the Lakes, I didn't plan to do the Wainwrights at all, and it didn't occur to me to leave a really good one to the end either!  Maybe I'll be more methodical next time round...?!!

Thanks again, everyone.  I'll be putting my photos on Webshots as soon as I get a chance.

Jill (R) .... it's your turn next!  Looking forward to the champers already... !!!

Jo

Congratulations from us too. We were thinking of you all yesterday wishing we were sharing the damp experience with you. We know a drop of wet stuff doesn't dampen a day when we all get together especially a really special day like that. You looked so happy with the champagne bottle, look forward to seeing some more pictures from the day - Jill Batchelor

Well done Jo from the Burnley contingent. "Why Raise?" asked Dave Brown. Well I may have found a clue. Open your Wainwright Book One on the page marked "Raise 2". Read the first sentence. I'm sure Jo got that special cheer, usually reserved for the mountain, as she reached the summit - Richard Ratcliffe

Congratulations and welcome to the club.  I'm so glad you got there - pity the weather wasn't better but it doesn't really spoil that great feeling as you get to that last summit, does it - Liz & Barrie

Well done and congratulations from me too! Chris G

Congratulations on completing your round of Wainwrights. I can see from Roger's pictures and video clip that the damp weather didn't dampen the spirits or occassion - Angela Clarke

Congratulations from me too, Joe :o) Paul Rose

Just wanted to add my congratulations too. It was a bit of a damp day but it certainly didn't dampen our spirits. It just shows what true-spirited fellwalkers we are! I know Wainwright was out on the fells on many such days - Jill Rowland

I am sorry to hear the weather wasn't so good, but I am sure that the company made up for that. I spoke to Angela (Angie) today and I know she had a great time. I hope you had some Champers on the top - Sherran

My congratulations to Jo on her 214.  First time I have seen cards and congratulatory text messages on a misty mountain summit.  A good day was had by all - John Paterson

Fraught Fellrunners Face the Floods
Read more...This autumn has seen some heavy periods of rainfall interspursed with some reasonable sun.  However, the water table has remained relatively high and recent heavier rainfall as on the 6th September, 4th October and over the course of this weekend has led to unfamiliar conditions across large swarths of Lakeland.  This weekend's weather has led to serious problems with one group of geography students becoming marooned between Honister and Borrowdale.  Accompanying the weather events was the annual Original Mountain Marathon which unfortuitously led to many participants becoming fellbound in the atrocious conditions. Mercifully runners were experienced and well prepared and major human suffering seems to have been averted on this occasion.

The Litter District?
Read more... A recent ascent of Crag Fell above Ennerdale corresponded with the showing of Panorama on BBC1.  This particular episode was a special programme where Bill Bryson, The American chronicler of British life and President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England presented his views on how the British have given up their pride in their beautiful landscape.  My recent outings gave an opportunity to focus on this situation in a place I have greatest fondness for in the fells of the north.
