Kapellan 2007 was the centenary of Alfred Wainwright's birth and there were various events to celebrate the great Blackburnian. Aside from the gatherings, the OFC decided to mark things with its club journal being devoted to AW. Surprising everyone, the journal raised an impressive £700 and in August, 19 members of the OFC gathered in gloomy and wet conditions to hand over the monies raised after a tour around the famous animal shelter. Many will know the name of the shelter from the way AW presented his royalties to the charity. Although not founded by him, this was already in progress by a group of Kendal women, AW gave his blessing with considerable sums raised from the sale of his books. The charity is now often referred to as the Wainwright Shelter in AW's memory. An audio visual presentation from the event:
Recently, a new cattery has been opened at the centre and our presentation was very much welcomed, helping to cover some of the costs of this new build which was very impressive in its weatherproof UPVc. Although it is often preferred to donate monies supporting human charities, the shelter does perform a very useful duty in releasing pets from families who can't afford to raise an animal, whose owners have died and for animals that are just found as strays. Of course we could argue about the morality of presenting money to such a cause but readers and supportes of the OFC know that our list of supported groups is a very broad church indeed. It seemed appropriate to support AW's dearest cause. In the Cross Keys After the event the gathered members drove over to Tebay for a more social gathering in pleasant surroundings at the Cross Keys, Tebay. On the wet day it was great to have a drink or two in convivial company and talk about Lakeland matters. Several of us even had the chance to see a sneak preview of Mark Richards' new Fellranger guides which have recently been published. Every copy of The Lost Sheep raises funds for a new cause and we are very open to suggested recipients of the money. Apart from the obvious mountain rescue teams, we have now raised money for SARDA, the repair of the Wainwright Memorial Window in Buttermere, St James's and future support is being given to Calvert Trust and ROSNI. |
Driving along the A13 recently, I noticed familiar mountain names emblazened on the side of a car. On return home I was keen to discover the amazing project being advertised by the vehicle and the equally incredible expedition being undertaken by a group of scuba divers in order to raise funds for Help for Heroes. Find out more about this expedition from Shane Farnham and then why not consider their worthy cause in support of 'Help for Heroes'. |

The continued good fortune of being in Cumbria along with good weather, continued again on this outing, as a few OFC again gathered in Coniston. My intentions were not to stay in Coniston, but with £100 to give to Coniston MRT it seemed logical to overnight in Coniston for two nights in order to make the best of my time. Robbie K had already contacted me to say he would join me and Lorraine also hinted at a walk out. However, as with all things, matters can change but I was mighty pleased when those who said they would walk did so. Along with myself, Robbie, Lorraine and even Steven P joined me on the long ascent of the Walna Scar Road from the village. It really was a magic morning! |
