SATURDAY Edale carpark, L to R: Richard, Lorraine, Neil, Angela, Steve, John R, Sue [photo John C] As Simon has already said he couldn't make the walk due to car trouble and Geoff also cancelled due to ill health so it was eight of us (the 8 being myself my husband John, Neil, Steve, Lorraine, Sue and her husband John and Richard) who set of from Edale at 10:15 hoping the cloud was going to lift and give us a clear crossing of Kinder later in the day. Kinder Scout trig point Sadly this wasn't to be and whilst we were going across the top led by my John we acquired two additions to our party in the form of Sarah and Tony who were on the top in thick cloud with no compass or map. Having safely got them back onto the path they needed and being unable to persuade them to come with us we gave them a map and told them to stick to the path. We hope they made it back safely. We all made it safely back to the Nags Head for a welcome pint and ended up at the George in Castleton for a meal that was large in portions if not in taste, but the company was good and it was warm and dry inside! SUNDAYWe were down to four (Phil Winter, Neil, Angela and John Clarke) today for our walk along Bamford and Stanage Edges. We all met up in the rain hoping that the weathermen were going to be correct and it would improve. They were correct and by the end of the day there was plenty of blue sky with some excellent and very colourful views. Well done to Neil and Angela for organising the event. I'm not going to say too much here because there will be some great reports from these organisers and others who had their cameras out much more than I did. For me it was great to set foot on to a new set of fells and John's (Clarke) navigational skills with compass and map were absolutely necessary on the crossing of Kinder in heavy mist to our route down back to Edale. It was an enjoyable walk - thanks to Angela & Neil for organising. Phil W Just to add my thanks to Angela and Neil for organising the Peaks meet. It was good to meet up and now be able to put faces to future postings. Sue Kennerley
Thanks for an enjoyable squishy day. Steven Procter

This autumn has seen some heavy periods of rainfall interspursed with some reasonable sun. However, the water table has remained relatively high and recent heavier rainfall as on the 6th September, 4th October and over the course of this weekend has led to unfamiliar conditions across large swarths of Lakeland. This weekend's weather has led to serious problems with one group of geography students becoming marooned between Honister and Borrowdale. Accompanying the weather events was the annual Original Mountain Marathon which unfortuitously led to many participants becoming fellbound in the atrocious conditions. Mercifully runners were experienced and well prepared and major human suffering seems to have been averted on this occasion. |

A recent ascent of Crag Fell above Ennerdale corresponded with the showing of Panorama on BBC1. This particular episode was a special programme where Bill Bryson, The American chronicler of British life and President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England presented his views on how the British have given up their pride in their beautiful landscape. My recent outings gave an opportunity to focus on this situation in a place I have greatest fondness for in the fells of the north. |
