Ann and Roger at home and proudly wearing their OFC badges
Ann and Roger
Roger and Ann Hiley were last night honoured by the Online Fellwalking Club for all their Lakeland related activities and positive contributions in their 9 years with the OFC.   As Helmut Hudler once put it, "Peter might be the brains of the OFC, but it's the Hileys who are its heart."  Undoubtedly there are many fantastic members within the OFC, who also contribute so much, but from the time of their subscription the energetic couple have contributed so much to the camaraderie within the club.

Apart from their OFC contributions, Roger and Ann are a tour de force in the local community.  Since settling in Loweswater, after selling up from their native South Wales, Ann and Roger have become involved with many local activities.  Apart from community involvement within the parish (such as being involved in the local theatre group and as first responders), Ann is also a volunteer for the Calvert Trust in Keswick where she helps out with individuals with disabilities and Roger works part-time for Fishers in Keswick where he passes on his wealth of fell-related knowledge.

When called upon, the Hileys have always given much of their time and hospitality and have tried to be a proactive part of things.  When the Alfred Wainwright Society was formed it was Roger Hiley who immediately offered to lead guided walks and also uses his sales technique to sell The Lost Sheep in the Kirkstile.  Roger and Ann are of course active walkers and run their very own website.  Roger is the webmaster of www.loweswatercam.co.uk which has so far received in-excess of 300000 visitors many of whom look in from the far corners of the globe.  They and their website are an excellent addition to Cumbria's tourist battery - that should be acknowledged.

I am sure they may well dread seeing this article, but I am sure that everyone within the OFC, as well as visitors to their very own website, will join me in wishing them all the very best for the future and their continuing enjoyment of the fells they adore.  I will say little more but let the following quotes from friends and members do the talking!

A very big thanks to you both and of course - Ad altiora!

A big thanks from the OFC
Thanks!

They are obviously an extremely kind, considerate and thoughtful couple, and I am very pleased to have made their acquaintance.  Charles Uppington
I must send our sincere thanks to you both for the hospitality and friendship that you have given to Bill and myself.  You are the heart of the club and I am sure that through you, many people have become good friends.  Love from Sherran and Bill
I'd just like to say that Roger and Ann have a completely natural habit of making all who visit or walk with them for the first time feel like old, established friends.  Over several years of this hospitable treatment, genuine established friends actually begin to feel as if they're members of their family!  I always look forward to seeing them, and consider a 'Hiley-less' Lakeland visit to be a greatly missed opportunity.  Ian Smith
Ann and Roger are not just our friends but since moving to Cumbria two years ago they've been  neighbours as well and we are so lucky to have them.  They are a mine of information and support as well as providing many restorative cups of tea when the house renovations have all got too much for us.  They've been there for us when the roof leaked, during floods, during industrial scale tree felling, when Ollie died - and they never ask for or expect a darn thing in return. Thanks guys, it wouldn't be the same without you.  Jayne and Max
What a fantastic family. They make you feel so welcome at their house and will always welcome me and Beth when we visit the Lakes whether in joining us on a walk or serving tea and scones at Oak Cottage.  They will always take the time to comment on photos making our walking a worthwhile experience. Also, Roger is always a knowledgeable source when sourcing a new GPS! Thank you to you both.  Simon Howard and Beth
I first came across the Hiley website early in 2005 when we were checking out various sites regarding Lake District walking. We began checking out proposed walks on their site and found it very informative and loved the photographs.  I was also looking to make contact with other like-minded people, but several hiking group sites required subscription or even insurance!  I discovered the link with the OFC and joined on 29 March 2005.  I began posting and swapping views and info with fellow members, even though Chris was a bit worried about this virtual club I had joined and had visions of midnight rituals at Castlerigg Stone Circle!  We eventually met up with Ann and Roger, John and Jill R later that year and his worries were dispelled!  We have been on various OFC walks, and more recently our Debz has become a member. We have met many new friends through the club.  It's always fun as well as interesting joining in the walks, even though Roger, Bethan and Harry usually end up coming back to round me up at the back of the line!  So many thanks to Ann and Roger for all they have done!  Linda Charnley
In  London, alas, not Loweswater, but best wishes to  Roger and Ann.  Hunter Davies, AW's Biographer and Author
They are so thoughtful and can't do enough to make you feel at home.  Jill Batchelor
Whilst looking on the Internet for Lake District walking sites I stumbled upon Loweswatercam, I have rarely stumbled since, due to their kindness and scones!  Dave Dimmock
Thank you Ann and Roger for being brilliant walking companions, a mine of information and of course your kindness and generosity!  Les & Kev
Roger and Ann have a special place in the collective heart of the Mould family, and played a significant part in my Wainwright Round.  The memories of walking Hen Comb with Ann (and others!) and Fellbarrow\Low Fell with Roger will live long in the memory.  David Mould
Throughout my time in the OFC I have found them both to be very kind and helpful to both old and new members. They never fail to respond to other members' postings which is something I find almost impossible to do.  They are what the OFC is all about and hopefully after failing on a couple of occasions we will meet up if only for a brew and scone.  David and Edith Brown
They are the glue that holds together our place on the web.  Richard Ratcliffe
I can't be sure, but I'd bet that Ann and Roger were the first people to welcome me to the OFC when I went 'public', which is typical of them.  In the years that I have been involved with the OFC they have always been more than willing to offer advice, whether it be about possible routes or the state of the ground in the Lakes when John and I are planning camping trips.
In my experience, if you're going to walk in a new area, having Roger as a guide is highly  recommended, as a bit like Wainwright he can tell you what you should be looking at, even when the cloud is obscuring everything above ground level.
If there is one thing above all else that stands out to me about Ann and Roger it is their hospitality. If the OFC was to have a Head Office it would have to be 'Oak Cottage'.  It never ceases to amaze me how many people they have welcomed into their home, both as over-night visitors or for cups of tea and scones following walks and on days when it is too wet to walk.
In every organisation a few key people define the way an organisation works and to me Ann and Roger typify everything that is good about the OFC.  It comes as no surprise to me that the OFC has been so successful as Ann and Roger have been involved with it from the start and so much of what is good about them is seen in the ethos of the OFC.  Angela Clarke
I'd like to thank Roger and Ann for their company, knowledge and hospitality over the past few years.  You've certainly put Loweswater on my map!  James
Roger and Ann Hiley bring enthused fusion and local connectivity to the Online Fellwalking Club, their daily appreciative responses to members' postings and galleries have given the club a real sense of community.  Mark Richards, Lakeland Author and illustrator
Who would have thought that through joining the OFC I would meet such wonderful friends as Ann and Roger. Their kindness and generosity knows no bounds.  Angie Espin
After chickening out of John's barbeque I first met Ann and Roger in February 2002 when they rescued me as I struggled to get through to Buttermere for the third OFC meet in appalling weather conditions.  It was an indication of their compassionate and generous natures that made them go out of their way to find me and their determination not to give up on me was amazing.  I think they have to be two of the most open-hearted and generous people that I know and you can always be sure of a warm welcome and wonderful hospitality (not to mention Ann's fantastic cheese scones!) at Erk Cottage! Jill Rowland
I would like to say a very big thanks to Roger and Ann who have been so generous and taken a strange Scottish lady into their home and have  unfailingly encouraged me. This club would be much the poorer without them. Thanks lots   Frances Lawrie
I've known Ann and Roger for nearly 9 years and count them among my best friends.  They've brought the best of everything to the best club there is.  Long may we be friends and long may the OFC continue.  Liz Lemal
Just to add my thanks to one of the OFC's linchpins.  They and the dogs are always there to welcome in any OFCer who may stray near Loweswater and Roger is always so full of assistance when encountered  on Fishers third floor.  Sue Kennerley
Thank you for all your support and help especially when I was ill.  You always have a good word to say about everones walks and photos.  Lorraine
"My sincere thanks to Roger and Ann who love and appreciate the lakes and fells and who have been kind enough to share their enthusiasm with me on so many joyous occasions. Jo Hall
Roger and Ann are a lovely caring and friendly couple who are always willing to lend a hand whether it is for the OFC or providing walkers with an extensive source of local information. They always provide a very warm and hospitable welcome and their tea and scones have become a speciality in Loweswater. When it comes to walking on the fells they are perfect companions whether it rains or shines. They are truly a delightful couple and it is tremendous that they are associated with the OFC.  Neil Haslewood
Thanks to the OFC I managed to meet and become friends of Roger and Ann, a fantastic couple who's hospitality and friendship are second to none. Their dedication and contribution to the OFC has helped to bring together like minded people from across the country to forge a network of friends that could not have existed otherwise.  Sean McMahon
By reading the OFC message board, you feel the positive, friendly spirit there, which is very much influenced and enhanced by Roger and Ann Hiley´s contributions.  Moreover, you find them to be extremely friendly walking companions and very hospitable when meeting them in their home in Loweswater, from where they are the “puppet masters” [organisers] of so many OFC events.  I owe them, not only for introuding me to the OFC, but also for introducing me to Lakeland and its mountains – thank you so much!  Helmut Hudler, Austria
Always friendly, welcoming, great walking companions and full of enthusiasm and local knowledge. The Hammonds
The Hiley website was one I used to check out when I still lived "down south" and it reminded me of  what I was missing in the Lakes.  When I retired to Egremont I contributed a couple of photos to their visitor's gallery and soon got an invitation from them to join the OFC.  I found that, apart from their shared and obvious love of the Lake District, they always take the time and trouble to look at everyone's pictures and to comment on them individually, not a task to be taken lightly during a busy life.  And,
if you are ever in Loweswater, there will be a welcome cup of tea at their cottage for you and a few hairs from Harry and Bethan! Terry Gargrave

N.B.:
Can I say a big thanks to all those who responded so quickly to an e-mail asking for some choice words to add to this article.  Apologies if I missed you, but as I had to send out requests individually (a message via the OFC would've given the game away) some OFC members may still want to contribute to this article.  If you do, please forward your message to me in the usual way.  Thankyou. Focus on the Drakensberg

Read more... For those of you who hated the World Cup in South Africa, it did at least give the BBC the chance to produce some mountain related programming.  On a 2004 visit to the Republic of South Africa I jumped from my seat when a colleague told me she could see the Dragons' Mountain from the starboard side of the plane.  That view from 30000' was my first glimpse of those legendary mountains and it immediately cast a spell on me.  Thankfully the spell metemorphosed into a rewarding visit at the end of the trip. This article contains links to three films, two from the BBC and one from my own archive vaults.  I hope the Drakesnberg casts the same spell on you as it did on me.
