£500 Raised! "We're on a small industrial estate in Foxfield", said Martin Cooper, DFMRT's Supporters Club Coordinator when he spoke to me on the phone. I couldn't recall seeing such an area, but having completed a walk in the Duddon earlier in the day, I returned to my holiday base via the small hamlet, formerly the junction for the Coniston branch railway.
At 7.30pm prompt, 15 members and friends of the OFC gathered in the darkness outside the small industrial unit in Foxfield. We were greeted by Martin and as previously planned I asked Steven Procter or Fr. Paul Harrison if they wanted to present the cheque. Before this organised evening for many, it was intended to have an event earlier in the year when our two Barrow residents might have been the only two OFC representatives. However, as the presentation date now coincided with half term, it meant many more people were around to enjoy proceedings. However, I still wanted to honour the previous suggestion and it was Fr. Paul who happily handed over our cheque for £500 to Stephe Cove the Chairman of DFMRT. The team were pleasantly surprised.
Fr. Paul Harrison As the team were busy training the rest of us retired outside to be served with coffee from the back of a Land Rover - we're talking basic facilities here. After visiting Cockermouth, Ambleside and even Kendal's team bases we could immediately see our monetary contribution would be well received.
Martin Cooper and Cynthia showed us some of the equipment carried in one of the team's Land Rover 110s and demonstrated how gear is carried by individuals onto the fell. Both Roger and Gill were happy to try on one of the stetchers.
Stretcher bearer After a while we returned back into the warmth of the small base and whilst other members of the team continued their training we chatted. John Leadbetter's search and rescue dog, Skye was one of the main attractions and many posed with the amazing canine to have their photos taken.
The evening was rounded off with a photo opportunity with everyone standing around the 'big' cheque for £500. Sadly, a planned gathering at a nearby hostelry had to be shelved as the local road was being closed at 10pm. A welcome pint of best had to be forgotten, but a great couple of hours was enjoyed by members, friends and acquaintances. Another great OFC occasion to remember:
 School reunion! |
Driving along the A13 recently, I noticed familiar mountain names emblazened on the side of a car. On return home I was keen to discover the amazing project being advertised by the vehicle and the equally incredible expedition being undertaken by a group of scuba divers in order to raise funds for Help for Heroes. Find out more about this expedition from Shane Farnham and then why not consider their worthy cause in support of 'Help for Heroes'. |

The continued good fortune of being in Cumbria along with good weather, continued again on this outing, as a few OFC again gathered in Coniston. My intentions were not to stay in Coniston, but with £100 to give to Coniston MRT it seemed logical to overnight in Coniston for two nights in order to make the best of my time. Robbie K had already contacted me to say he would join me and Lorraine also hinted at a walk out. However, as with all things, matters can change but I was mighty pleased when those who said they would walk did so. Along with myself, Robbie, Lorraine and even Steven P joined me on the long ascent of the Walna Scar Road from the village. It really was a magic morning! |
