Jo, Jill Rowland, myself and Ann and Roger had a wonderful walk yesterday from Bowness Knott in Ennerdale. The weather was warm but rather humid so it was sunny in the valley but with cloud building up above the fells. Ennerdale is undergoing changes at the moment. A management plan will see some felling of conifers, regeneration of native trees, a lowering of stock levels and more cattle with fewer sheep. This should result in a wider variety of flora. Above the valley the boundary walls are being rebuilt to keep unwanted stock from straying into the valley. Unauthorised vehicles are already banned from going beyond the two car parks at the foot of the valley. Our walk started with a walk of about one and a half miles to the head of the Lake where we crossed the river Liza and into the forest. We then climbed the long heathery ridge with no name between Silvercove Beck and Deep Gill. A short walk at the top of the ridge brought us to the flat summit of Caw fell where we had lunch. Midges in evidence in the lee of the wall so we sat in the wind by the summit cairn! The Ennerdale Fell race was on and the lead runners passed us at Caw Fell summit. They were well spread out and we were still meeting runners below Haycock well over an hour later. En route to Haycock we diverted to Little Gowder Crag - not a Wainwright but the best summit of the walk!. Haycock was busy with runners and a check station for the race being manned by volunteers. Then it was down by Tewit How and into the forest again. Where the forest path crossed Deep Gill both dogs and humans took the opportunity to cool off. Then the long walk back to the cars. We didn't rush, we probably took far longer than we needed to but we enjoyed a great day out and a nice meal in the pub at Ennerdale Bridge on the way home!
