The weather changed today just as forecast.  I decided on a circuit of Dunnerdale including Stickle Pike - one of the Outlying Fells.  I have seen this walk many times on Sean's site but today there were none of the wonderful views.  I started in mist and only dropped out of it for about ten minutes.

I parked at Kiln Bank and headed first to Stickle Tarn and then Stickle Pike.  I'd marked out the route on the GPS which was lucky - there were plenty of paths but they headed in all directions!  Then to Tarn Hill (well named) and Great Stickle before dropping down to Hove Knott and the green lane leading to Scrithwaite Farm - a remote but welcoming place the farmer seemed pleased to see me.

Then I crossed to road and headed up a public footpath through Knott End farm yard.  There are three exits from the farm yard but no sign to say which is the path.  So I asked the farmer - I felt as if I had really spoiled his day.  After a big sigh (at having to stop the tractor engine) he pointed out the correct gate.  I bit my tongue - it was very tempting to tell him that if he wanted walkers to leave him alone a small sign on the correct gate saying "path" or even a little yellow arrow would cure his problem!  :-(

Then on to the Knott - not the highest fell on the walk but it felt like the biggest because you start the climb from much lower down.  Then a pleasant ridge to Raven's Crag - well as pleasant as you can get with only ten foot of visibility.  Then the GPS led me back past the quarries and over a low ridge back to the car.

It drizzled on and off throughout but the downpour which threatened held off.  The drizzle was hard enough to make the bracken wet though - isn't wet bracken and shorts a lousy combination?  The only downside to my route was that it didn't descend as far as Broughton Mills so I never got to sample the beer at the pub - the Blacksmith's Arms, I think it is.

My webshots album limit has been reached so I am having to amalgamate some of my smaller walks into single albums.  Today's pics are in an Album now called "Short Walks in May and June 2007".  The first picture is number 59 but, hopefully, the link will open at the correct photo http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2766450510035788806NJIjCX
