The Matterhorn boulder on Grey Friar summit plateau
The Matterhorn boulder on Grey Friar summit plateau
Roger and Ann picked me up this morning and we headed to the top of Wrynose Pass to meet Jill (Lakes Lover) and David.  We had decided to start at the top of the Wrynose pass abd do a fairly short walk as the weather was forecast to break in mid afternoon.

There was a cold wind at the top of the pass and despite sunshine for much of the day the wind varied from cold to very cold for most of the walk. You could get away with shorts (as I did) but wind proofs on the upper body were essential and Jill and David wore Paramo at the summits.

We climbed without incident to Wet Side Edge and then branched right to traverse to Grey Friar.  On the summit plateau Roger "summited" the Matterhorn boulder in fine style.  We didn't hang about at the summit - it wasn't the weather for it!

Next objective was Swirl How where we had lunch out of the wind just below the summit with good views down to Greenburn.  Then down to look at the WW2 Canadian Halifax bomber memorial just below Great Carrs. Just uphill from the memorial are signs of old molten metal in and on the ground giving some idea of the inferno at the time of the crash.  The plane failed to clear the ridge by less than 30 feet on a training flight in bad weather - the crew were very unlucky.

We had seen a reasonable number of people on the other two summits but Great Carrs was like Picadilly circus - with denim jeans promising a very cold descent for any novices caught out by the rain which was heading our way.  We didn't hang about on the descent from Wet Side Edge as the weather was closing in.  In the end we made it to the car just as a slight drizzle started.

Then it was off to Coniston for tea and cake at Jill and David's
holiday apartment - nice!  :)

"Just had to say, thank you for such a grand few minutes. I am 67 now and my knees are past the challenge of such a climb (Tryfan article) but it was great doing it again online with you." Sheelagh Finlay
