Wet and windy on High Pike Print

Jo, myself, Ann and Roger had a wet walk on High Pike yesterday.  Plan A had been to climb Carrock Fell from "Apronful of Stones" and then traverse to High Pike.  The lousy weather forced us into plan B which was to drive a little further up the road and park by the ford where Carrock Beck crosses the road and climb High Pike only, as this was the fell that Jo had not done.

Our walk actually started in the dry and it lasted all of five minutes before the drizzle started.  We were aiming for Dry Gill to gain some shelter from the wind on the ascent.  By the time we reached Dry Gill we had all put overtrousers on and our hoods were up.  Dry Gill was not quite dry yesterday, it had a trickle of water but not much.  The Gill was extensively mined in years gone by and a big variety of minerals litter the ground.  When we popped out of the top of Dry Gill and into the wind, we were only a quarter of a mile from High Pike summit.

The old wrought iron garden seat on the summit of High Pike has been replaced by a slate memorial seat and my photo shows three of the most bedraggled fellwalkers you could imagine sitting on it - trying to smile and look happy.

From the summit we headed north and then west and descended through the old mine workings.  These would repay a lingering exploration on a fine day but not yesterday, sadly.  From the bottom of the workings it was only a short walk back to the cars.  We had not stopped for lunch on the fell (too wet, too windy) so we changed into dry gear where needed, ate our sandwiches in the car and headed for the Mill Inn at Mungrisedale for a welcome drink.

Roger and Ann were spending the evening in a big tent in Fitz Park, Keswick with a load of other posh people so Jo and I decided to dine with the poor people of Keswick in Morrell's excellent restaurant.  Obviously we would prefer to have been in a big tent but we know our place in society!

The pictures are in my May and June 2007 Album.  The link below will take you to the first picture of the walk.  You can either use the "next" key to bring up the pictures, or go into slide show mode.  Either way there are 19 pics of yesterday's walk after which the album recycles to the start of the other five walks on the album.

"On Saturday we met up with Ann and Roger Hiley, John Paterson and Terry Gargrave for a walk up High Rigg and on Monday we met Paul Harrison on Pike O'Stickle. It was a real pleasure meeting everybody and we enjoyed every minute." Dave Leslie
