Had a super weekend if a tad damp in the Lake District staying at Ambleside Backpackers, an Independent Youth Hostel in Ambleside that I would thoroughly recommend, an in the company of the Club that I walk with. On the Saturday we walked up to Stickle Tarn and up Jakes Rake to Pavey Ark, then Thunacar Knott and High Raise. Jacks Rake was everything I thought it would be, as I am scared of anything with exposure, it was scary. Though we had dry conditions on the way up the rocks were damp and slippy, and I suffered a big bruise where I slipped. Make a mistake on Jakes Rake and it's a long way down, but I just look at my feet and the next hand hold, always using as many points of contacts as I can. We intended to walk further but the weather turn rather wet and windy so we returned via Dungeon Ghyll which looked lovely in its autumn colours. On Sunday, the weather had at least stopped pouring with rain but it was still cold and misty. As we had a long drive home we chose a short day, and walked through some Gills up onto a snowy, cold and misty Red Screes. We were surprised at how many people we met at the cairn. When we returned to the car park SARDA dogs and their owners were there getting ready to go out training. I certainly would not fancy doing the body job in that cold weather... Brrrrrr. We rounded off our short day with a lovely lunch at the Kirkstone Pass Inn. I have been focusing on the Munros this past year, so I am now looking around and having time to see other parts of the country. I hope to be back down to the Lakes again. |
