Over the years our love for Cumbria grew and grew until Max and I decided we couldn't stand it any longer, upped sticks and moved 350 miles north. During the last couple of years before the move I visited my favourite "Lakeland" websites on an almost daily basis. It might sound melodramatic to say that I was sustained by the images shared by many OFC members, but my daily fix of the Lake District both kept me sane and reminded me during the more stressful weeks leading up to our move just why we were doing this.

I've a long way and many lifetimes to go before I'm as experienced a walker as other correspondents here, and I'll never be as good a photographer, but I hope by sharing my View From I can give something back, and perhaps "pay it forward" to those who have not yet been as fortunate as Max and I.

Summer Solstice and a bonus inversion

Read more...I've always found the longest day of the year to be a special one and did not want my first Summer Solstice in Cumbria to pass by unremarked.

Living the Dream
Monday, 11 February 2008

Read more...We've all done it - turned right onto the M6 at Penrith sadly heading back south after another lovely holiday and sighed "Let's retire to the Lake District; I want to live here, not have to leave after a week".   My husband and I have been saying that for more than fifteen years and early in 2007 made the decision that now was as good a time as any, we did not want to be exiles any more.

This is our experience of making the much-longed for move to Cumbria.

FEATURED VIEW FROM
The View From: Blake Fell and Carling Knott

Read more...Ann Hiley, Jo Hall, Max and I set off from Loweswater at 11.45 in thick fog and Max and I were both quietly thinking to ourselves "we're nuts".  No visibility, no chance of any views so I left my camera in the bag.  However, 1.5 miles into the route we suddenly realised that the cloud above us was considerably thinner, and that might be blue sky above, and YES, there was a fell up there!  Cameras out and jackets off - IT'S INVERSION TIME!

The View From: Sale Fell

Read more...When on holiday in the Lake District every walk counts and so it should.  Each outing is planned and considered, and the best use made of the available time in order that the day can be savoured once back at home.

Living here is rather different.  A lot of my walks are short trips, either grabbing a couple of hours in between all the other things that have to be done or dog-walks.  At 12.5 Ollie still adores being out on the fells but can't manage much more than a couple of miles every four days or so, he then spends the intervening time sleeping soundly, eating and then going back to sleep.
