I've always found the longest day of the year to be a special one and did not want my first Summer Solstice in Cumbria to pass by unremarked.  I woke early and was able to take these pictures from the front garden. Skiddaw looked wonderful as the light constantly changed and there was the unexpected bonus of a small inversion over the river and surrounding fields. After nearly an hour I was getting cold and decided that going back to bed was a sensible proposition!  I think I got the best of the day as by mid-morning high winds arrived with some (much needed) rain.

And this is what it has been like ever since

A friend asked me why I had not gone to Castlerigg Stone Circle  but in truth I like my dawns to be solitary.  I would have enjoyed being somewhere like Coledale Hause for sunrise and if it had been warmer/I was not still so tired from all we've been doing at the new house/so disorganised, then I might have gone.  Maybe that should be my plan for next year?

Several more pictures are on my Webshots album, where registered users can also leave comments.

The View From: Grasmoor via Coledale Hause

Read more...As John has quite rightly said, this beautiful spell of fine weather is about to end and I wanted to get out for at least one long walk before the cloud and rain arrived.  Today's walk was a simple stroll from Braithwaite to Force Crag Mine, up Coledale Hause and then on to Grasmoor.  And because Grasmoor is a cul-de-sac (AW's description, not mine), it was There And Back Again.
