Skiing in Gressoney, Italy Print

The Monte Rosa ski area is an area of steep-sided, wooded valleys strewn with boulders large and small. Because of this the ski area, whilst huge, is only medium sized in terms of the number of runs - although some of them are several miles long with descents of up to 5,000 feet. The valleys are branch valleys off the huge Aosta Valley which stretches for many miles below the Swiss border.

We also had one day at Pila - a big snow bowl high above the Aosta valley. North facing, this bowl had good snow and was less steep than the Monte Rosa area. With fewer rocks it was an "off piste" paradise.

We arrived in Gressoney in sunshine, we had a foot of snow on the first night and the following day and then enjoyed 5 days of unbroken sunshine although high winds (to 70 mph) prevented us using the higher lifts on one day. Our hotel, the Jolanda Sport, was the one we stayed in 11 years ago. It is now three times as big but the decor is superb, the food great and the ambiance is Italy at its best - and best of all the ski lift is 20 yards from the back door!

The landlady claimed to remember us from 11 years ago. She has won many cups for skiing and her son has followed in her footsteps but he favours snowboarding - much to her dismay! A great holiday with great company. Many of us have skied together for over 20 years.

FORNSIDE CHRONICLES
Blencathra via Halls Fell and Sharp Edge

Read more...I will be joining Helmut on Blencathra (possibly with Jayne Hill) and it is possible that Helmut will descend via Sharp Edge if the conditions are dry.  Polly has climbed Sharp Edge before but never descended it so, as conditions were superb today, I decided we would climb the mountain by Halls Fell ridge and descend by Sharp Edge to see if Polly was going to be fine.

Today's walk from Three Shires Stone

Read more...Roger and Ann picked me up this morning and we headed to the top of Wrynose Pass to meet Jill (Lakes Lover) and David.  We had decided to start at the top of the Wrynose pass abd do a fairly short walk as the weather was forecast to break in mid afternoon.

UWR 18: Brim Fell from Low water

Read more...With rain forecast for this evening (which has duly arrived) I headed south over Dunmail Raise early this morning for a route I have had my eye on for a while.  I parked in the carpark at the Walna Scar fell gate and headed off up the tourist route up Coniston Old Man.

UWR 9: Helvellyn via the steep Mines Gill

Today was cloudy and cooler than the past few days so I thought it would be a good day to do Helvellyn via the steep Mines Gill route which heads straight for the summit from just above the shores of Thirlmere. This is another of AW's routes which has never found favour with many walkers.
