Park & Stride 20 - Place Fell from Patterdale route overview

To many Ullswater is the most scenic of all the lakes. It has the air of a mighty fjord snaking in a succession of reaches, from no one point is there a holistic view. At each of its turns comes a wholly new perspective to adore. Place Fell rises solidly to the east of the water-head community of Patterdale. Its high rugged sides and its eastward curving shore the basis of the upper two reaches of the lake. Passengers on the lake-long steamer cruises may gaze most intently at the high fells to the west, notably St Sunday Crag on their upstream journey. But travelling in either direction from Glenridding Pier to Sandwick Bay all eyes will inevitably alight placidly upon Place Fell’s colourful mural slopes. Place Fell is far more than a pleasing façade, it is a wonderful ‘place’ to walk. The prospects from its summit majestic, the outlooks from its roller-coaster shoreline path absolute heaven, from which description you rightly may determine this a very special fellwalking experience.

Setting forth

Regain the main road and walk left (south) from the Patterdale Hotel, the road bottlenecks in passing the curiously tapered White Lion Inn, obviously built on jealously limited circumstances. The footway leads to a tight meander of the enchantingly named Goldrill Beck, the stream-name refers to marsh marigold, to this day the valley pastures can glow with their rich yellow raiment. Turn left into the no through road crossing Goldrill Bridge to the rather exclusive community of houses known as Rooking.

4 Peaks Scuba Challenge
Read more... Driving along the A13 recently, I noticed familiar mountain names emblazened on the side of a car.  On return home I was keen to discover the amazing project being advertised by the vehicle and the equally incredible expedition being undertaken by a group of scuba divers in order to raise funds for Help for Heroes.  Find out more about this expedition from Shane Farnham and then why not consider their worthy cause in support of 'Help for Heroes'.

Dow Crag by South Rake
Read more... The continued good fortune of being in Cumbria along with good weather, continued again on this outing, as a few OFC again gathered in Coniston.  My intentions were not to stay in Coniston, but with £100 to give to Coniston MRT it seemed logical to overnight in Coniston for two nights in order to make the best of my time.  Robbie K had already contacted me to say he would join me and Lorraine also hinted at a walk out.  However, as with all things, matters can change but I was mighty pleased when those who said they would walk did so.  Along with myself, Robbie, Lorraine and even Steven P joined me on the long ascent of the Walna Scar Road from the village.  It really was a magic morning!

WAINWRIGHT - His Life from Milltown to Mountain
Read more... COMPETITION: Since the centenary of Alfred Wainwright's birth in 2007, there has been a massive resurgence in interest in the man himself.  With the revival of the Pictorial Guides as a result of being saved by Frances Lincoln Publisher, the recent televising of Wainwright's Walks with Julia Bradbury and the formation of the Society in his name, there has been renewed enthusiasm for anything AW.  Along with Hunter Davies biography of Wainwright, this new book also announces itself as the biography of Alfred Wainwright.  This review (with competition) focuses on Wainwright, His life from Milltown to Mountain by W.R.Mitchell.
