After leaving my Land Rover at Kentmere, Ian drove my father and I around to Longsleddale and Sadgill. The walk started here and I guided the two into Wrengill. The quarry here has played havoc with the natural hydrology and the infant river appears and disappears at least twice! To be honest, I think this is one of my favourite little places, the kind of human and natural interaction has led to a most amazing location. After examining the old engine shed (a potential OFC club hut!) we ascended the incline to the upper quarry where the river emerges and disppears in the frame of one photograph. I've never done it, but this could be an interesting place for a wild camp as long as the river doesn't rise in the night!
From here I guided us round to the other quarry where the river plummets over an artificial lip into a quarry before again disappearing. The waterfall here, although artificial, is quite something and made that extra special by being unseen until you are virtually on top of it. It was great to show other people the quarry and I think Ian was pleasantly surprised.
From Wrengill we traversed the flanks of Adam Seat to the col at Little Harter Fell. Once here we re-enacted the AW pose (how many thousands before us?), before wandering onto the summit of Harter Fell.
The visibility today was tremendous and we could see a very long way into the Cheviots. Descending to nan Bield we soon traversed around towards Thornthwaite Beacon where we had lunch. From now on the horseshoe we followed was the famous route down to Garburn Pass and to my Land Rover at Kentmere - at least we didn't have a two mile walk back to Longsleddale as on my last similar outing!
Thanks to Ian Smith for joining me and for the company of my father who, it has to be said, did very well indeed!
Here's a video record of the day:-

"I love the Lake District. Went for first time 20 months ago. OFC website is the best thing I've found, along with all the members' sites. My kids at school log on every morning as well." Sue Sullivan
