Back o' Skiddaw with David Mould Print

David Mould became acquainted with me via his online postings via the OFC and I knew he had to be of a similar ilk when I learnt he drove to the Lakes and back on day visits!  Today's walk encompassed a fine route Back o' Skiddaw and after some poor weather earlier in the week today's conditions were at least dry.  With Skiddaw enveloped in cloud, today's circuit took us on an anti-clockwise path, including, Carrock Fell, High Pike, Knott and Great Calva.

After we parked the cars at GR327327 we quickly gained height onto Carrock fell.  Mention should be made of the amazing spring we both witnessed on the flank of Carrock Fell south of Round Knott.  This amazing geographical phenomenon appeared as if somebody had buried a housepipe and then turned on the tap.  I had to presume that this normally subterranean spring had welled up due to water pressure exerted from the heights above.  Until I, or others investigate further I can assert no better explanation.  I hope you enjoy this first installment and watch out for that water jet!

After Knott the two of us continued towards Burn Tod but keeping to the col continuing to Little Calva.  For a while the conditions darkened but we enjoyed the vistas in this wild and remote neck of the Lakes.  After a halt on Great Calva we descended to Wiley Gill where we admired the circular sheepfold.  Continuing back along the Cumbria Way we completed the walk in fine form after a fantastic round in good company.  I hope David enjoyed the excursion as much as me!
