Ascent 1 The wall ascent from Sadgill on the first part of the route onto Grey Crag - steep but efficient! Looking back on the bridge and car. For Helmut, Sherran and Jill Deer Encounter! The two 'sentry' stags Beauty surrounds thee! Peter records his 11.45 am visit to Grey Crag in the OFC Geocache log book there. I registered Grey Crag as my objective for the GLC and a great choice it turned out to be. ...and of course I carried my trusty AW companion. Ascent 2 On my descent from Grey Howe back into Longsleddale I spied two walkers on the road below. I quickly ran down the flank of the fell and recognised Ian Smith as one of the walkers. I reached the valley bottom as Ian and his brother Mike were about to take the fell path. Sneaking up from behind the wall, Ian was amazed to see me. He was setting off up Tarn Crag via Grey Crag and so I couldn't miss the opportunity. I turned tail and joined them on their tour for the GLC. "Ding, ding. Round 2!" On the flanks of Great Howe. Mike points out the flanks of Goat Scar and Kentmere Pike. The valley head - Sadgill Ian records his GLC visit in the Geocache log book beneath Grey Crag. My second visit to Gret Crag summit cairn today! The cairn was looking particularly attractive after some rebuilding by me. It even afforded this fine vantage by some 'geeza' in fetching purple (not pink I hasten) Ron Hills! We finally reached Tarn Crag. Proudly surveying all he owns - well at least for today! Tarn Crag (Sleddale Fell) summit - Ian's objective for the GLC Left to right - Mr.Planky, Ian, Peter and Mike The second Manchester Corporation survey post encountered today - an interesting relic adorning the fell "The Breaking of the Fellowship" Mike sets off to take in Branstree and Selside Pike, whilst Ian and I returned to Longsleddale. Descending the Gatescarth Pass - the fine metalled surface of the road. This really was an exceptional day. What was planned as a one-off ascent of Grey Crag, ended up turning into a fantastic experience of flora, fauna, friends and fellsides. I have to give my thanks to Ian and his brother to adding even more to a great Lakeland day. Long may they continue. |
