Photo of DaveOnce out of Glenridding I had initial plans to ascend the back wall of Kepple Cove, but as I ascended, the invitation to walk into Brown Cove was enticing.  As I walked past the old dam at Keppel Cove, SARDA and Patterdale MRT were on a training exercise so it was fortunate that I didn't intend to follow my route into the cove and thereby risk upsetting their procedures.  I continued into the valley to meet another duo of walkers already donning their ice gear.  I sat on the revetment of the old dam in Brown Cove and donned my crampons and unleashed my ice axe.  It was getting exciting and the adrenaline began to flow.

I joined Steve and Dave as we planned to ascend the same route and having them as company was enjoyable in these conditions.  To be able to share the experience as it happened was fantastic and the photographs with people in them leant scale and interest.

To be frank, climbing as a trio held good notions of safety if anything went wrong, but as it happened all that slowed us was the steepening slope and the gasps of awe as the views revealed themselves behind.  This ascent in snow just had to be one of the best.

Once on the plateau, I gave my farewells to my colleagues and turned my sights to Helvellyn before descending Swirral Edge to Red Tarn which was frozen in the cold.  Climbing onto Striding Edge I traversed the crest of the arete and climbed once more onto Helvellyn's summit plateau.  Heading north after refreshment at the cross shelter, I  ascended White Side and Raise, before descending to Stang past the ski pull on the lee of the fell.  Passing the old chimney I sat for a while on Stang as the weather deteriorated and snow began to fall.  I reflected on my day, and pondered how fortunate I was to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.  It had been a truly wonderful Lakeland day.  I hope you enjoy the video and feel you've gained a taste of my day.

Other OFC members were on the same fells as me today, but I only got to meet Stephen.  Some fantastic photographs and Stephen's diary are available at the following links:
