FRCC Memorial Four days in Lakeland over Remembrance weekend was eagerly anticipated by me again this year. Having promised my parents I would lay a new kitchen floor, I was then rewarded with three excellent walks in great company. This article examines the three walks including Hopegill Head, Great Gable for Remembrance Sunday and Wansfell in the company of my father.I have embedded the walks within the following tabs. I'll let the audio-visual presentations do the talking but I will reiterate my thanks to the hearty company along the way. I hope you enjoy watching my time away, as much as I enjoyed being there. Thanks so much to everyone involved and of course to Roger and Ann Hiley who again gave freely of their hospitality. I have inlcuded links to other's images from the walks as well as some images of Roger and Ann Hiley who were awarded with OFC Gold badges in recognition of their services to the club.
Hopegill Head
Striking out! A drive over to Loweswater saw a walk in progressively worsening weather over the snow covered tops of Hopegill Head. Along with Roger, Ann, Jo, John, Neil and a collection of dogs, three of us finally made it to the summit of Hopegill and Whiteside which was beginning to live up to its name. Thankfully, modern gear kept the worse of the weather at bay and the triumvir of hardy fellwalkers made it back to Loweswater where the forward party had prepared tea and scones. What more reward after a hard ascent? Hopegill Head AVA Presentation

Ann and Roger Having organised the production of new OFC enamel badges the thought of having special badges created also entered my mind. There are many people within the OFC who make it an extra special group of like-minded hillgoers and so the OFC Gold badge was born. I was eager to award the first badges and the likely inaugural recipients in the absence of any OFC committees and polls were to be Roger and Ann Hiley.
Great Gable
FRCC Memorial The OFC ascent of Great Gable for the 2009 service of Remembrance performed by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club. This year the weather held and the party ascended from Honister Hause, meeting with Richard Ratcliffe and Ben Hammond. After the service, the group retired to the Westmorland Cairn to take lunch before descending via Green Gable and Grey Knotts to Honister Hause. Bethan and Harry Wansfell Wansfell Pike Before returning home, I took the opportunity to take a final walk in brilliant early November weather in the company of my dad. A fine view point, a not too taxing ascent and suitable wayside refreshment was the order of the day and with this in mind Wansfell between Ambleside and Troutbeck was the chosen fell for today's itinerary. Wansfell summit With my dad in tow, we parked up at Troutbeck Bridge and ascended Wansfell via Nanny Lane. The summit of Wansfell Pike was crowded with folk, so we wandered across to the true summit where we ate lunch with just our own company. Wandering down Nanny Lane we arrived at the Post Office in Troutbeck where we had a lovely cup of tea. A pleasant end to a lovely walk in fantastic weather - just what Lakeland's all about. Most of these walks are outlined in Wainwright's Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells. |
