Winston Churchill's idea that Epping Forest would remain the lungs of London is still intact today. For generations of Londoners, especially those in the Eastend, a trip out into Essex and a walk through Epping Forest was and still is a lovely experience. Only a mile and half wide at its widest, the forest can still carry you away into a charming forested world far removed from the hussle and bustle of London. So it was today as Linda and Peter took a walk out on the wild side of London's urban fringe. |

In late 2003 my brother phoned and suggested the following prospect, "How do you fancy walking the Tour of Mont Blanc with me?" Never wanting to baulk at exciting suggestions I immediately agreed and after a discussion over logistics and the challenge ahead I went off the phone to read up on the subject. I had heard about the walk which is one of the world's greatest mountain trails and then it dawned upon me..... could I walk 105 miles and ascend 32800 feet with a Royal Marine? However, the die was cast and the task had been set, so read on to follow the action...

A day trip down to Tenterden in Kent witnessed an excursion along the charming Kent and East Sussex Railway. This day out is about as far removed from Lakeland as you can get in the British Isles but it was lovely all the same, with a back drop of agrarian lands and visit to a fairytale castle. |

A sunny Spring day saw Peter and Linda meeting at the Ritz to join one of the famous guide led, 'London Walks'. Having never set foot in Westminster Abbey before, it gave a chance to see at first hand the memorials and graves to some of the pivotal figures in British and world history. A truly humbling time capsule of the nation. If you haven't been then go! But first, here's a brief resume of a day out in lovely London sun..... |

To accompany my weekend in Lakeland attending the Wainwright Commemoration service in Buttermere, I took the opportunity to have another walk out before my return to London. The Hileys had kindly accommodated me on Saturday evening and so after a pre-breakfast jaunt hunting red squirrel (!) Jo Hall, Ann Hiley and myself (along with a triumvir of dogs) set out for a saunter up Mosedale, later to become a much longer tramp for me... |

Scafell was enticing but it would be a long drive. I could walk from the house but then I wouldn't be on the high fells. I had missed most of the earlier season's snow and it would be fun to find some. So, an early start and a short half hour drive answered it for me as I stepped out of the car at Walna Scar into freezing, clear conditions with an inversion across Coniston.... |

With friends and colleagues staying 2 miles from our own holiday accommodation at Lakeside, I offered a day trip in the car to visit two of Lakeland's best preserved Roman remains. Both Steve and Chris have classical history as a major interest and today's drive tour encompassed this including a couple of other Lakeland gems worthy of inclusion along the way... |
