A week's stay at Lakeside with friends had me thinking about different routes over the stay. Being surrounded by lovely fells I thought I might explore some more of Gummers How, take a walk around the lovely High Dam and surrounding woods or even take a low level walk through Grizedale. As is usually the case, we all long for the high fells and so I found myself on Tuesday 17th February parked up at Cockley Beck ready for a 7am adventure towards Bowfell... |

After heavy night snow I awoke early anticipating having to drive Tracy into Stratford. As we prepared the headteacher rang to say that school would not be opening and that staff and students should stay at home. As we were both togged out ready for the worst of the weather we decided upon a walk in our local area..... |

Christmas has been a quiet but enjoyable event this year. Staying at home gave the chance to entertain some friends and relax at home without a long drive to a holiday home or the like. With a new kitchen to cook in, Tracy and I were more than prepared to entertain. |

My four days in Lakeland for Remembrance weekend proved to be a real adventure. With a night in Bowston, one in Seathwaite and another in Loweswater I doubt whether I could've crammed more in. My stay at High House, Seathwaite as the guest of Mick Fox proved an excellent one. It was everything I could imagine and more. As a kid you dream of nights under canvass or in a mountain hut beneath high fells and in High House the K-Fellfarers really have a gem. Saturday dawned wet and grim and after Clare Fox dropped her husband at my parents' we drove up to Seathwaite in some appalling weather. Mick seemed content to stare at the weather through a pane of glass... |

At 4.30am I drove out of East Ham, London bound for 'The North'. Within four and half hours I was at home with my parents and pondering over the next few days in Cumbria. I was keen to spend time with my parents, but mum was insistant I get out in the better weather before the forecasted precipitation blew in. I had planned to climb Rainsborrow Crag and so without further ado, drove up Kentmere taking up the last carpark space near to the church - so it's still busy on weekdays? I set out alone and saw just one other person all day until returning to Kentmere Hall later in the afternoon. |

Four fantastic days in The Lake District culminated with a flourish as I took a short but nontheless exhilirating excursion onto the heather clad slopes of Mellbreak. However, what Roger (the local expert) and I did not realise was that this seemingly innocent fell, often overshadowed by its near and higher neighbours, has a more sinister side than many of us could imagine. You might do well to read on, but shhhh! Keep this one quiet...... |

Today's outing was always going to be the reason why I was in Lakeland, but with four days in hand the annual Gable ascent was not just the main event. Since establishing the OFC, I have been amazed by the wealth of generosity within the OFC. I will always remember staying with Ed Ball at John Paterson's during the F&M crisis and from that day the kindness shown to me has been amazing. I guess this is also true for many other members and perhaps to even a greater degree. This weekend summed up the spirit of the OFC. |
