Peter and skis A New Year's Day ascent of Ill Bell started with a walk up valley past Kentmere Reservoir. The ascent, in worsening winter conditions, included the ascent of the mountain's north-east ridge. This was a relatively short outing in terms of mileage but made up for it in terms of severity and the environmental conditions at the time. The return route included the crossing of Yoke before returning to the Green Quarter, Kentmere by way of the Garburn Road. Each tab below contains the audio-visual presentation from each day
New Year's Day ascent of Ill Bell via the North East Ridge Today's outing was the first of two New Year's outings onto the felltops. I had planned to traverse the north-east ridge of Ill Bell for a while now and with the winter conditions, I correctly summised it would make an interesting and exiciting escapade. No doubt in summer conditions this route might be seen as serene, but the winter conditions of today made it into a very serious undertaking, with all the severe weather gear at hand. I'll keep the words short and let the following presentation do the talking. Enjoy!
Yoke Descent on Ski - 2nd January Ever since John Paterson offered me a pair of downhill skis a few years ago, I have been dying to use them in Lakeland somewhere. With predicted snow over New Year, I loaded the car with the usual gear along with the skis and my larger Denali back pack which has slots for holding skis. After my reconnoiter on New Year's Day, the stage was set for a descent of Yoke via the south ridge. The skis were heavy to carry on the ascent, but once at the summit of Yoke it really did seem worth the effort. The day really has to be one of my top ten experiences in Lakeland so far! I look forward to repeating the experience soon.
