Loweswatercam, Crag Fell and Grike with Frances
Before she left for her journey north, Frances and ourselves ventured round to Ennerdale for a shorter walk. Crag fell and Grike are a great way to pass three hours in the presence of fine views... normally.

Loweswatercam, A view of Scotland for Frances
Our visitor today was Frances from Linlithgow in Scotland. She wanted to climb some Lakeland fells for a change so we took her up Grasmoor via Gasgale Gill. The weather was clear enough to see Scotland, but not quite her home town!

Loweswatercam, Yewbarrow, Jill's last Western Fell
Jill is on the home run for her final Wainwrights. The weather forecast was poor for the central fells so we headed south and west to Wasdale to climb the missing fell in her list of Western Fells.

Dow Crag South Rake with Andy Wallace
It was a cool bright morning when I left home and definitely Spring-like when I got to Coniston. The sun felt so warm that I had to take my jacket off at Miners Bridge on the way to Coniston Old Man; as I reached the old quarry workings I had to put it back on again as the cold easterly wind started to bite. It was bitterly cold at the summit and the wind was much stronger as I descended to Goat's Hawse. There wasn't much evidence of a path as I started to traverse the steep scree slopes of Dow Crag; as I reached the base of the crag a faint path materialised and I followed it past the Stretcher Box and up to the South Rake. The South Rake is a steep stony gully that provides a challenging and interesting ascent to the ridge of Dow Crag. When I reached the ridge the wind was even stronger; after a couple of occasions having had to throw myself to the ground to prevent the wind blowing me off my feet I decided to retreat. I walked below the crest of the ridge back to Buck Pike and Brown Pike but still had difficulty staying on my feet; there were plenty of other people coming down early from the ridge.

Loweswatercam, Fellbarrow and Low Fell with Jayne
Jayne has escaped from her house moving boxes to start her new project to walk every fell seen from her front window. She starts with a phone call and ends with a three hour outing around Loweswater.

Photo of Galloway backpack

V&G, Central Galloway Hills Backpack
A short walk designed as a reconnaisance trip to help with a planned longer circuit of Eastern Galloway. The last minute post-lunch decision saw me hurriedly packing and steaming north to Galloway to gain high ground for a pitch, mindful of the cold easterly weather stream that may or may not extend this far west but could give clear air and dramatic skies for pictures. It was mixed in the end, some gloomy misty views but some very clear.

Loweswatercam, Eagle Crag and Sergeants Crag
Roger's at work so it is just three of us on the walk in the Langstrath area today. Eagle Crag ahead of us is in sunshine as we look up the valley.

Loweswatercam, Muncaster Fell with a train ride return
With a very poor forecast for the central and eastern fells we decided to head west. Muncaster Fell would do very nicely thank you. It was at 11am that Ann and I were waiting at the station car park - first ones there for a change!

Loweswatercam, Local Pictures from this week
This has been a turbulent week for weather, the contrasts being greatest of course between the high fells and the valleys. Here are a few extra photos to tie the week together. Confused ... so was the weather!

Loweswatercam, Nick's Scafell Pike from Seathwaite This has been my second visit to Lakeland, it seemed to me that Scafell Pike was a "must be climbed" mountain considering the incredible conditions of the day . . . great visibility, some snow and crisp winter conditions.

Loweswatercam, Back O'Skiddaw with the Hush Puppies
Andrew Mason is on the home run for his Wainwright Round, John, Paul, Nick, Ann and myself were invited to join him. Six people, three dogs, but only five pairs of boots between us. Ooops ! What a Cockup!

Angie Espin, The Rolling Rutland Hills for Jill
A walk of almost 10 miles, starting in the pretty village of Belton-in-Rutland, to show Jill the lovely hilly countryside that the tiny county of Rutland has to offer. This outing could be classed as a 'Mini Meet' as we were joined by fellow OFC member Sherran & her husband.

Deepdale with Andy Wallace
It was a fairly mild morning when I set off and still sunny when I parked near the phone box at Bridge End at the entrance to Deepdale Hall; the frosty looking high tops suggested that it might not be a mild day up there. I walked back to the Cow Bridge car park and continued on the track past Brotherswater and Hartsop Hall towards Dovedale. I walked up the steep, attractive valley towards the boulders of Hunsett Cove; I took the steep reconstructed path past the ruin before making a diversion to find Priest's Hole cave. After making the obscure but best ascent of Dove Crag I took the regular route to Hart Crag and on to Fairfield and the descend by Cofa Pike and walked to the summit of St. Sunday Crag. I walked over to the summit of Birks before descending steeply to Trough Head and then more easily on a quiet path to Deepdale.

Loweswatercam, Robinson as winter returns
Today they predicted sunshine and wintry showers as a cold blast of northerly air would bring wintry conditions back to northern Britain. The sun is out, it's cold and the air is clear for the start of our walk up Robinson Fell.

Loweswatercam, Ling Fell after a dull day
The forecast was for a dull day clearing in the afternoon. They were spot on for a change. We ventured out of the valley a short distance for our walk today. It felt almost like spring!

V&G, Wensleydale & Swaledale 2-day backpack
A varied backpack combining valleys and hills, visiting the waterfalls of Wensleydale, the little frequented mine-scarred high moors above Castle Bolton and returning along Swaledale to finish with a traverse of Great Shunner Fell.

Angie Espin, A Walk on The Edge
A Walk on The Edge. Sounds exciting doesn't it?  However, this was the Lincolnshire Edge which reaches the dizzy height of just over 250ft! This narrow limestone ridge feels higher due to the flatness of the surrounding land.  The walk followed The Viking Way through the delightful villages of Wellingore, Navenby, Boothby Graffoe & Coleby.
