On Monday Paul Harrison and I had arranged to go for a walk in Longsleddale. Needless to say the weather changed our plans! Instead we drove to Ambleside and had to decide between Wansfell Pike and Red Screes. We chose Wansfell and it was a good job we did as Red Screes didn't show its top all day. We walked up via Stockghyll Force and were quickly onto the fellside accompanied by quite heavy snow, adding to the considerable amount that had already fallen. The steps up the fell were hidden and quite treacherous with all the compacted snow. We had occasional blue sky but many heavy bursts of snow, it was a really good experience, seeing glimpses of Ambleside below and occasional views of the fells around us. With a few slips, slides and tumbles we made it to the top of Wansfell Pike and were rewarded with remarkable views along Windermere and also of the Coniston Fells, most other directions being blocked by snow showers. It was decided not to go to Wansfell proper as the wind was really biting, so we descended in fine weather to Nanny Lane where we were often rewarded with stunning shows of spindrift, the effect was spectacular at times and hopefully the photos manage to show how good it looked. A cup of tea at Troutbeck Post Office was a nice break before we headed round to Robin Lane and a nice easy walk to Jenkin Crag. The scenery along the way was lovely with Windermere shining in the late afternoon sun. Ambleside was quickly reached and a welcome bowl of soup was greedily gulped down (by me, Paul was much more refined!). Another superb day on the fells in really good company. My thanks to Paul for helping to make it such a good walk.
