After an early morning stroll around Derwent Water, a proper walk was needed, so the 79 bus was caught and Rosthwaite Fell called! I walked from mountain view up the path alongside Combe Gill, a steepish path which quite quickly led to Tarn at Leaves, this was all new ground for me and made it all the more enjoyable. Bessyboot was soon underfoot, with good views to the north and west but too much haze for the east and south to look much. This was a fell I'd looked forward to for a long time, my final Southern Fell. I'm not planning particularly to finish the Wainwrights, but I'd always wanted to complete the Southern Fells, so mission accomplished. Back to Tarn at Leaves then up to Rosthwaite Cam, great place. A nice little scramble up to the top and then down again to follow the route up to Combe Head. My head for heights seemed to return today as standing on the edge of crags didn't seem to bother me. Next step was up to Glaramara, a favourite fell of mine, another scramble led to the top, no stopping though, the wind was surprisingly cold! I route marched across the various minor tops, stopping for pix of the many tarns along the way. The view to the east was finally clearing, giving good views of the pikes but still hazy toward Coniston. My final top of the day was Allen Crags, great views of Sprinkling Tarn and the Gables from here, but with a mission to get to Loweswater, I didn't stay for long. Grains Gill led down to Seatoller, a lovely descent, with many waterfalls and rock pools, cue more photo stops! I caught the bus at Seatoller and got off at Lanthwaite Green, the haze now totally gone, the views of Whiteside and Grasmoor were superb. A short woodland walk followed to Hileyland, the rest has been recorded elsewhere (blowing out candles etc)! Many thanks to Roger and Ann for a lovely evening. My 36th birthday was as good a day as I've had, new fells, new sights, good food and great company.
