Sheffield Pike from Glencoyne Print

Sunday's walk was intended to be Sheffield Pike and Glenridding Dodd, new turf for me, not for our companions though.

It thundered early in the morning and we thought we'd be calling the walk off, but we decided to give it a go and see what happened.

Lorraine and I met up with Lin, Chris and Debz at Glencoyne and despite a 'changeable' forecast, proceeded with our plan.

In lovely sunshine we headed up Glencoyne valley, up past Seldom Seen and veered around the west end of Sheffield Pike to Nick Head.  The views back to Ullswater were great.  Hazy and darkening as the threat of 'mucky stuff' came in.

On reaching Nick Head, after Debz decided the wind was strong enough to do some acrobatics (also known as getting blown over), we stopped for a bite to eat out of the freshening wind.

Catstyecam and slightly snowy Helvellyn dominated the view as did the filthy weather creeping over St. Sunday Crag.

Wind/water proofs were put on and we wandered up to the top of Sheffield Pike, many stops to count the tadpoles on the way, I suppose it's as good a place as any to be a frog (or toad).

The view from the top was top quality, Ullswater looking grand, nasty skies making the fells look suitably menacing.

Next stop was Heron Pike (yes I know, another Birkett bagged), in the blustery and damp weather we decided to leave Glenridding Dodd for another day and headed back over Sheffield Pike aiming for the Sticks Pass path.  After some trekking pole sword fighting, we carried on down through the quarries to Glenridding along Greenside Road.  It was a tad wet but the pub was there so it would've been rude not to sink a pint (only one).

The walk back to the car was... soggy, or should I say bloody wet - it poured down.  On the plus side, the ethereal views across Ullswater were worth the soaking.

A lovely walk with great company, many thanks to Lin, Chris, Debz and of course, Lorraine.

Cheers for a cracking day out.
