Stickle Pike and Hodbarrow Reserve Print

On Saturday Lorraine and I had a small but very rewarding walk up to Stickle Pike.

The weather was gloomy but the clouds broke and we saw the inversion lifting and settling on the high tops.  It was very hazy but local views were spot on.

We parked in a layby at the top of the road from Broughton Mills and made our way up past Stickle Tarn to Stickle Pike, lovely views but extremely hazy.  We wandered back down to the motorway sized path and headed up over Tarn Hill.  I can't imagine how it got its name!  There must be getting on for a dozen tarns up there, including the dried up remains of some.

Great Stickle was next and had great views back to Stickle Pike but not much else, the cloud was hanging at a point just below the top of Caw which gave us less of a view than we'd hoped for.  Still a very nice place to be though.

After a quick break we were setting off back for the car, passing by Stickle Tarn once again.  Another quick break and we had a mooch around Stainton Quarries, lots of old mines and levels to look at but not explore.

Back at the car we decided to head to Millom and Hodbarrow nature reserve.  It was red hot there, lots of families out walking but still very peaceful.  The old flooded mines looked good in the sun but looked ominously deep and forbidding (no paddling here!).

After a bit of a beach walk we headed back past the mines and the old lighthouse and made our way back to the car.

A couple of short walks that were both more than worth the effort.
