I had planned to have a walk up to High Dam on Wednesday. As usual, my plan changed and I went to Torver instead. I followed the bridleway up to the Walna Road with no clear plan of where I was heading, making it up as I went along. The quarries were interesting to have a look round, especially the big flooded one, always a nice place to be. On reaching the 'road' I decided to head up to the Old Man via Goats Hause. Not my favourite route, it seems to get steeper each time! The views ahead were encased by Dow Crag and the Old Man but the views behind toward the coast were nice. On reaching the hause I watched the shepherds training some young sheepdogs, a few choice words were used to get them moving the right way. I have no idea what an effing dog is! Too quickly (panting and puffing) I arrived at the trig point on the Old Man and couldn't help but notice the place was very quiet - until I looked on the other side of the platform, like sardines in a can, about twenty people hiding from the chilly breeze. Brim Fell came and went, as usual it was a very pleasant crossing. Then the wind got up a bit more as I crossed Levers Hause, it got pretty cold. Next stop, Swirl How. Possibly my favourite fell top, the views are usually great and today was no exception, wonderful scenery all round. Prison Band was its usual quick descent, no time wasted getting down there and then down into Greenburn. The next mile or so was all new to me, so it was nice to wander along the valley bottom having a look at the reservoir and dam. The weather turned to summer as I followed the path toward Little Langdale, beautiful views all the way, especially when the Langdale Pikes popped out. The next step was taking the green road over the quarries to Tilberthwaite, again, lovely scenery, except for the highland cattle - which refused to move from the gate! I had to shove gate and cow to get through. The cow didn't bat an eyelid, bloody thing! From Tilberthwaite it was time to get a jog on, two and a quarter miles in fifty five minutes to catch my bus. I made it with ten minutes to spare! Luckily I wasn't in too much a rush or I wouldn't have seen the deer in the fields near Coniston. It wouldn't turn round until I whistled, then I managed to get a photo. A nice way to finish a cracking day.
