The Alpine Angle

Helmut HudlerHelmut Hudler is one of our international members, living in Austria. He became very keen to learn about the Lake District and compare it with his own homeland in the Austrian Alps. In May 2005 Helmut came to the UK to see the Lakes for himself and was hosted by several members of the O.F.C.

Born in 1955 in Austria´s capital Vienna, many of my childhood and youth time have been dedicated to music. Starting with piano, then recorder, I soon switched over to Violin, which I studied till about the age of 19. In parallel, studies in harmonics and counterpoint completed the education.

Knowing that earning money with music is quite difficult, I studied Medicine, which I finished in 1982. After some research work and some years dedicated to microbiology, I started a training in Histopathology, where I am working now as a consultant, for the last 2 years in my own praxis too.

From teenager on I loved to climb mountains, first with my parents, then with my first wife and on several occasions with good companions, climbing some high mountains in glacier regions in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. The second passion, combining with the first, was fotography, in the pre-digital area mostly colour slides. Most of my high walks have been documented by many slides, for which I spent much money.

Regarding outdoors, I also like the bicycle; after my divorce and move to Winzendorf, a small village near Wiener Neustadt, which is about 40 km south of Vienna, I started to ride to work every day, which added up to more than 5.000 km in a year. Some long distance rides added up, and for a few years I also did some running, culminating in two successful Vienna city marathons.

After digital cameras had emerged, I discovered a new interesting field for me, that had slept for several years: landscape and flower fotography. So I started to document my walks and rides with the camera, and share the pictures on my homepage, http://www.Landschaftsfotos.at

Making music has changed for me to preferably singing, many years as singers in different choirs, for the last 2 years as a conductor of a local choir, which gives much fun to me.

Many spare time also has been dedicated to planning and constructing my one furniture.

If you ask me for the motto of my life, I shall answer:

Be all-round, try to keep with many different topics.

Use your intellect, think logical

Keep and live your feeling, be kind and honest to yourself and everybody.

Walking in the Mediterranean
Wednesday, 06 May 2009

They mostly go in search of  bathing at the beach, enjoying themselves in clubs or admiring objects of cultural interest. Only a minority of people go there for walking.  Every year in spring, the tennis club of Winzendorf-Muthmannsdorf, Austria organises a tennis training camp in Croatia and this year Helmut Hudler, our resident Austrian correspondent, took the opportunity to explore the picturesque islands of Losinj und Cres in Croatia whilst his kids had fun with the tennis.  Follow on to find out more.....

Hoarfrost and Inversion in Austria
Wednesday, 26 December 2007

Read more...Winter cloud inversion and its twin brother, hoarfrost, are rather common phenomena occurring on the continent when polar cold air merges with a stable high air pressure zone. Sunshine and even warm temperatures on mountains above 600 to 1.300 m are seen above the clouds, and permanent frost beneath with pretty hoarfrost forming within the cloud zone. The air stratification being stable for up to several weeks, the edge of the clouds may however move up and down a bit, so hoarfrost zones are temporarily exposed to sunshine giving stunning impressions of a white winter wonderland. This article comprises a short explanation about the weather situation and an abstract on descriptions of two nearly identical walks under these conditions, leading from the mist zone up into sunshine and back afterwards.

Mountain walk in Crete - Spathi Madharas (2.148 m) in the Dikti Mountains
Friday, 10 August 2007

Read more...After several years of desire by my family, we booked a two week holiday in the Magic Life Club Lyktos near Ierapetra on the Greek island of Crete.

Ierapetra, the southernmost town of Europe (35th degree of latitude, more southern than Tunis!) is situated on the south coast in Cretes east, more than 100 km from Crete's main city of Heraklion. In the surroundings of Ierapetra, there are high mountains. The sea is crystal clear here and quite warm in August. The Magic Life club offers a comfortable ambience and lots of sporting possibilities.

Early Sunflowers and more
Tuesday, 03 July 2007

Read more...Yesterday morning, I had a short one hour's bicycle ride in my surroundings, inclear and sunny conditions. Unbelievable, but this year already the sunflowers are out, three weeks in advance as compared to other years. Additionally, there was an interesting cloud pattern indicating a change in the weather. Today it is overcast with deep hanging clouds and raining permanently.
