The View From: Wasdale Head Print

Despite the morning looking a bit dull and gloomy, Max and I decided to drive down to Wast Water (if only to see how long it took from home <grin>).   For the first weekend of 2008,  whilst we didn't want to do a huge all-day walk, we did want to visit somewhere special to get the year off to a good start!

Parking at Wasdale Head we wandered up the Mosedale path, until the big split boulder where we stopped for a drink.  It was obvious that Ollie was tiring so we crossed Mosedale Beck and returned back to the car.  Whilst we could jump over the many tributaries it might not have been the best choice of route for the dog - I think he got cold in the water and that didn't help his stamina and energy levels, something we will bear in mind in future.   The weather was improving all the while, we had a surprising amount of sunshine and even some blue sky - not bad for 6th January!   If it's possible to get a fractional glimpse of Scaffel above Lingmell then we did, but it was so fleeting as the cloud moved that neither of us were sure whether we'd seen it or not...

Our walk probably doesn't even qualify as a 'proper one' seeing as we achieved a whole 3.25 miles and no more than 500 feet of ascent;  we would have liked to head up Black Sail Pass or one of the other lovely routes in the valley but that would not have been fair to the aged Beardie who has done very little but sleep since we got home.

Pictures in the usual place http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/562042905nhChHH where you can see the full album, and if you are a Webshots user, write comments and a leave a Guestbook entry.  I'll confess to being slightly nervous about posting photos of this most hallowed of fell-walking areas...  I'm bound to have misnamed some terribly important fell so if you spot a faux-pas please let me know!

Hope these few pictures cheer up anyone further South and encourage you to book lots of trips to the Lake District for the coming year.
