Helmut's Big Walk May 2008 - Day 1 Print

Helmut started his big walk today in superb conditions.  Roger and Ann climbed with him over Ullock Pike from near the Ravenstone Hotel and parted company with him on Carlside summit.  Helmut then climbed Skiddaw and descended to Skiddaw Little Man and Lonscale Fell and then headed down the gully between Lonscale Fell and Burnt Horse crags.

Meanwhile Jayne Hill had driven with me to park my car at Scales and then we parked her car at the Blencathra Centre.  We walked up the Skiddaw House track to the footbridge over Glenderaterra Beck and had lunch whilst we waited for Helmut.  When we saw him descending the gully we headed up to the "guide stone" to meet him.

Jane then headed back down to her car (thanks for the help Jayne) and Helmut and I headed to the Cloven Stone for Helmut to have lunch.  Then on to Mungrisedale Common and eventually to the summit of Blencathra.  Helmut felt he was fit enough to try Sharp Edge so we headed down to the top of Foule Crag and Sharp Edge.

I'll let the photos tell the rest of the story...

A great day out and Helmut seemed to enjoy it.  So much so that he treated me to an excellent meal yesterday evening in the Horse and Farrier at Threlkeld.  We still managed to get up at 6.30 this morning for Day 2 - watch this space for my story of the first few hours of today's walk.

"Just had to say, thank you for such a grand few minutes. I am 67 now and my knees are past the challenge of such a climb (Tryfan article) but it was great doing it again online with you." Sheelagh Finlay
