High Raise (or a hunt for Helmut) Print

I finally managed a long planned walk yesterday. Grasmere to Seatoller via High Raise and Eagle Crag.

It was nice and cool to start, but soon warmed up and I was quickly heading up to Codale Tarn, a superb place with stacks of newts busy making little newts!!!

From here it was up to Codale Head for High Raise.  It was time for that rare lakeland game of "Hunt the Helmut"!

Even though I was forewarned of his summer plumage, the European Helmut is a difficult creature to spot, being likely to be found in any kind of mountainous area, he is a tricky character to locate.  Even with yellow shirt and bristly chin, an all round elusive character.  I once thought i'd spotted him, but alas my yodel went unanswered!

Anyhoo, I didn't bump into Helmut and so carried on down to Sergeants Crag and Eagle Crag, my first visit to these hills.  Lovely airy views, especially toward Borrowdale, looking extremely verdant.

A steep descent to Greenup Gill led me down to Stonethwaite then Seatoller with superb scenery all the way, even a few cuckoos knocking about.

The bus up to Keswick was a welcome rest and being open topped made it a great way to finish the day.

A great day out and plenty of photos, also very red arms!

PS Be warned, every pensioner in Britain seems to using their free bus pass in the lake district, if you want a seat, get there early. The Lakeland Pathfinder 555 was packed to the rafters!

PPS The schoolkids in Keswick all gave their seats up to other passengers, a surprising and refreshing change, good on 'em.
