During the recent flooding episode which hit Cumbria and some parts of south-west Scotland it seemed inappropriate to linger on the events and developing trauma to hit the area. Media hype has festered on the tragedy and many people watching on their TV or listening on the radio could do little but offer support directly to people they might know in the region either by e-mail or telephone. With the worst of the severe weather now over it seems appropriate to highlight the clean-up and aftermath as national media coverage begins to subside. Now that the clean-up has begun perhaps some of us may be able to offer support by way of financial contribution especially in the run-up to Christmas. If you'd like to donate - no matter how small a sum, please read on... |

Issue 8 - OUT NOW! The long and anticipated wait for the launch of the next issue of The Lost Sheep is now here. Issue 8 is a veritable feast of articles which again have lifted the quality of the publication to a heady height which belies our humble roots. The OFC should really be proud of ths publication especially after the £500 raised for Duddon and Furness MRT. If you would like to get your hands on a copy or 10 then please do read on... |

When Ellen Regan completed the Wainwright peaks as listed in his Pictorial Guides or, as many fellwalkers know them the 214, few would realise that it would become a family pursuit. Now, just three years later Robin Regan as completed the round at the ripe old age of 5 years, after superceding another sister, Kerry! |

A visit to the 2009 Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show at the NEC Birmingham. Featuring stalls from many groups and organisations with an outdoor link. There were also talks and demonstrations on offer and some interesting stands. Visits were made to most of the stands including Cicerone, a talk by Simon Yates, a visit to The Glade Theatre to hear Mark Richards, a visit of support for Michael Timmins and his Walk SOS banners as well as interest in all the demonstrations on offer. |

Singapore, 1922 was the birth place for a woman who lived in Kendal for more than half-a-century and who married a certain Alfred Wainwright in 1970. For more than 21 years the couple lived in happy matrimony until in 1991 AW died. Betty lived on to witness the burgeoning interest in AW and she gave her blessing to the formation of a Society to her former husband, as well as the newly founded Online Fellwalking Club. This article follows their story a little, including a small visual presentation from their service of commemoration on Sunday 28 February... |

Simon Howard introduces an article that may well touch many of us and make us all thankful that we can enjoy the oudoors whenever we choose. Simon carries on the story. On October 30th. 2008, my life totally changed. I was in the kitchen in the cottage on the Solway contemplating where to walk on that day. Beth and I had already had two very enjoyable walks in the Lakes that week when I received the phone call. The tragic news was that my 21 year old stepson Aaron James Ashforth had passed away during the night. I really wonder whether I can ask for your help?..... |

This autumn has seen some heavy periods of rainfall interspursed with some reasonable sun. However, the water table has remained relatively high and recent heavier rainfall as on the 6th September, 4th October and over the course of this weekend has led to unfamiliar conditions across large swarths of Lakeland. This weekend's weather has led to serious problems with one group of geography students becoming marooned between Honister and Borrowdale. Accompanying the weather events was the annual Original Mountain Marathon which unfortuitously led to many participants becoming fellbound in the atrocious conditions. Mercifully runners were experienced and well prepared and major human suffering seems to have been averted on this occasion. |

A recent ascent of Crag Fell above Ennerdale corresponded with the showing of Panorama on BBC1. This particular episode was a special programme where Bill Bryson, The American chronicler of British life and President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England presented his views on how the British have given up their pride in their beautiful landscape. My recent outings gave an opportunity to focus on this situation in a place I have greatest fondness for in the fells of the north. |

The updated OFC website is a year old. It doesn't seem two minutes since a band of merry fellwalkers took to southern slopes in order to launch the site from the summit of Ivinghoe Beacon. Although some technical difficulty was encountered James Hoye remotely launched the site and as they say in all the greatest stories, 'The rest is history!'... |

Sadly we hear the news that Betty Wainwright, beloved wife of Alfred Wainwright has passed away. The news is very sad but we should be joyous in the fact that she saw the resurgence of her late husband's work before today. In the last few years she has seen momentous activities with the republication of the Pictorial Guides and if possible an even greater interest in her husband's work. She has witnessed the birth of the OFC, the inauguration of the Wainwright Society and the republication of the AW guides. |

On one of my trips ‘north’ I had the good fortune to meet one of those people who to me represents the grassroots of the Cumbrian celebratory. Of course, amongst the climbing fraternity, Bill is famous as not only the son of Lakeland pioneer cragsman Jim Birkett, but also as a fine climber and author in his own right. In 2008 this book won best illustration and presentation and was runner-up 'Lakeland Book of the Year'... |

There has been some interesting information on the message board recently about the newly revised Alfred Wainwright Pictorial guides to the Lake District. AW never planned for the guides to be updated and figured they would gradually drop out of circulation. However, under the auspices of Frances Lincoln, Chris Jesty has been passed the mantle to update the guides fondly cherished and used by many..... |

"I love the Lake District. Went for first time 20 months ago. OFC website is the best thing I've found, along with all the members' sites. My kids at school log on every morning as well." Sue Sullivan
