We are a group of SCUBA divers planning to undertake a unique SCUBA diving challenge in support of the “Help For Heroes” charity which provides support to those members of the armed forces that have been injured in current conflicts.

Our challenge will be to dive the four highest above sea level dive-able bodies of water  in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland in a continuous 48 hour period on the 6th and 7th October 2012.

This challenge has never been attempted before and is a considerable physical endeavour.  The divers will be required to carry all the equipment they need to dive each lake without assistance, a total of 50-60 Kilometres and a total climb of 2,929 Metres and travel between each lake within a 48 hour period.

We will start our challenge in Northern Ireland where we will dive Lough Atona (475 Metres) which is not only the highest lake in the province but also the most remote.  From here we will travel to the Cairngorm Mountain range in Scotland and dive Loch Coire An Lochain (996 Metres) which is 13Kilometres from the nearest road.  Next is Red Tarn (718 Metres) on the eastern side of Helvellyn in the Lake District.  Finally we will travel to Ffynnon Lloer (650 Metres) in Snowdonia.

HAVE YOU SEEN?
Lakeland in Film
Read more... "Withnail and I?", I wondered as I perused the shelves of a DVD and CD store in Cambridge.  An accompanying friend said, "Buy it, you'll enjoy it."  And so it was that this DVD stood, unwatched on the shelf for half a year until last night.  I had already found that the film was set in Wet Sleddale and so I watched it this week.  Set in the dying months of the 1960s, wondrous shots of uncongested motorways, hilarious dialogues and with a Lakeland setting to boot I couldn't go wrong.  Having watched this piece of iconic film it then got me wondering at how many other films are set in the Lakes.  Perhaps with some suggestions, this article can grow over time so please do read on and write in with your ideas....

BOOK REVIEW - Wainwright's TV WALKS
Read more... Having a brand is the new buzz word and I am afraid that AW has become a brand.  Sadly, and I am sure he would hate this, when people mention AW in fellwalking circles, their ears prick up.  Of course AW is to be admired, but when people start to abuse this name many years after his death I begin to feel that they might just have lost the plot.  Although for anyone unfamiliar to AW, this book might be useful, however to most of us I think that investment in a very large barge pole will be the order.  I don't want to slate the company that saved the Wainwright guides but come on Frances Lincoln, let's have some originality if you are going to use the great fellwalker's name to sell a book!
