75th anniversary Sir Chris Bonington, Britain's best loved and admired mountaineer, will lead one of three sponsored walks on Saturday 14th May to raise money for the Campaign for National Parks. The walks begin and end at Derwent Bank, an idyllic country house on the shores of Derwentwater. The Grisedale Horseshoe is a challenging 9 mile walk, open to just 25 people, who will walk with Sir Chris on a route that, in his own words, is " better than Everest with some of the most lovely views you will get anywhere in the world".

Skiddaw from DerwentwaterFor the less experienced walker there is also a moderate 6 mile walk and an easy 3 mile walk which is suitable for all ages and abilities. Bordered by woods and towering crags, Derwentwater is hailed as 'Queen of the Lakes', and is surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery in the Lake District. All walkers can rest their weary feet after their challenge and take afternoon tea with Sir Chris after their walk. The walks are open to everyone but numbers are limited and you must register to take part. There is a registration fee £35 for the challenging walk, £15 adults and £7.50 for children for the other two walk; this includes afternoon tea. Walkers are also asked to raise sponsorship for the event.

HAVE YOU SEEN?
Lake District Mountain Landforms
Read more... As a child growing up, it was always a bit of a chicken and an egg, whether it was my interest in geography that led to my love of the landscape or the other way around.  Whatever it was, I always had an interest in how the landscape was formed and at school, like so many others, it was geomorphology that led to an increased understanding of the world around me.  From those school years learning about the diffluence col at Blea Tarn or the Chapel Stile Rock Barrier and its importance in the formation of Elterwater, there has been a massive void in the guidebook market.  Now this niche has been filled by Peter Wilson's excellent new book called 'Lake District Mountain Landforms'.

British Mountain Maps - Lake District

Read more...Since the days when people clung onto their Bartholomews' one inch map of the Lake District a decent map of the whole district has not really been available.  However, the BMC has recently published its very own map aimed it says for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers.  Does this map prove useful or is it not worth the paper it's printed on? Oh! That's the thing, it's not printed on paper....
