Cyclist in Wasdale Tonight, "Britain's Favourite View" on ITV1 christened the Lake District with this title. Sally Whittaker, more usually famed for her appearances on Coronation Street chose the view up Wast Water as her nomination for her favourite view. On a special live program, the British public then went on to choose Sally's view as their favourite over three other spectacularly beautiful views. I guess once more, linked with the Wainwright Walks and AW's Centenary, it might again just get a bit busy in Lakeland. I suggest giving Wasdale a wide berth over the next few weeks as the hoards who voted descend on the region! What do you think about such programmes? A good piece of publicity for Cumbrian tourism or a disaster as more tourists descend on an already pressured landscape? Have your say on the OFC club message board: Click here |

On one of my trips ‘north’ I had the good fortune to meet one of those people who to me represents the grassroots of the Cumbrian celebratory. Of course, amongst the climbing fraternity, Bill is famous as not only the son of Lakeland pioneer cragsman Jim Birkett, but also as a fine climber and author in his own right. In 2008 this book won best illustration and presentation and was runner-up 'Lakeland Book of the Year'... |

As a child I remembered many famous mountaineering figures apart from the obvious character of AW more renowned for his walking exploits. However, other names featured in my perceptions of the high places. Some of them like Tom Weir featured on television, others like W. H. Murray, entertained me from the cover of a book, whilst to many the man in this article spoke to us all from the regular feature in The Manchester Guardian newspaper. A. Harry Griffin wrote an amazing Country Diary for nigh on fifty three years. In this time he took many on an amazing journey outside, what was for many, their urban homes. |
