World Map showing traffic sources to the OFC
Global Traffic
Visitors to the OFC might like to have a run-down of the past year on the OFC.  We have had a great year in general and since I dreamed about a place to archive articles over 7 years ago we finally have a website of which all OFC members should be proud.  In this short year we have had lots of positive feedback and over 35,000 hits!

Presently we average over 100 hits a day with a high of 192 on June 3rd this year.  On the grand scale of things, these figures are modest but consider that this is achieved without financial backing or any form of publicity and marketing apart from that supplied by club members' word of mouth, The Lost Sheep and logos in the private cars of members such as Roger and Ann Hiley and Peter Burgess.

Geographically the spread of visitors to the OFC site is not surprisingly focussed on the North-West although London returned the most visits with over 13,000.  Manchester was the next largest source of traffic with well over 1,000 visits.  There have been visits from places wide ranging from Northern Ireland, Truro in the south-west to Aberdeen in the north.

Internationally there have been visitors from 78 countries including many hits from New Zealand, The Republic of South Africa, Chile, Russia and even Iran.  I know that some of the hits are accountable to family and friends such as the traffic coming via my brother in Uzbekistan!

Not surprisingly over a third of the hits to the OFC come in via search engines although now a third is also accountable to referring sites.  The remainder is direct traffic presumably from OFC members and users.

It must be noted that these statistics do not include visits to the Yahoo! site.  If you are interested, in the last seven years the Yahoo! message board had now had over 39,200 postings which does not take into account visits.  I think you will agree that we should be justly proud of our efforts over the past seven years and be deservedly proud of the way the new wesbite has developed over the last one.  My final words will pay homage to James Hoye.  Without James' expert assistance the OFC would certainly not have a website of which we should all be proud.  It's been great to have the contributions from resident 'correspondents' this year and I thank everyone for their commitment to submit content to the site.  A big thanks to everyone who is part of it - WELL DONE and Happy Birthday to the OFC!

HAVE YOU SEEN?
The Fell Walker by Michael Wood

Read more...Michael Wood mailed me a while back to ask if I would write a review of his book for the OFC site.  The title seemed appropriate and although having little time to read for pleasure took up the offer to review the thriller.  I have to say I really enjoyed the book, probably due to my links with the fells and can heartily recommend it to anyone here.  If you would like the chance to win a copy of this book then please read on....

BOOK REVIEW - Wainwright's TV WALKS
Read more... Having a brand is the new buzz word and I am afraid that AW has become a brand.  Sadly, and I am sure he would hate this, when people mention AW in fellwalking circles, their ears prick up.  Of course AW is to be admired, but when people start to abuse this name many years after his death I begin to feel that they might just have lost the plot.  Although for anyone unfamiliar to AW, this book might be useful, however to most of us I think that investment in a very large barge pole will be the order.  I don't want to slate the company that saved the Wainwright guides but come on Frances Lincoln, let's have some originality if you are going to use the great fellwalker's name to sell a book!
