A proposed walk on Sunday 22nd June was shelved after Peter Burgess chanced upon a road traffic accident at the summit of Kirkstone Pass. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries and despite the passenger of one car being taken to Westmorland General Hospital the only real damage was caused to both vehicles and the wall across the road from the inn.
 It was a good advert for Volvo as Barbara, the passenger, had seen her life flash by when she saw the car she was travelling in careering towards a Lakeland dry stone wall outside the Kirkstone Pass Inn.
 After the departure of the ambulance the prospect facing Sarah Blascow and her colleague was how to keep traffic moving over the pass in the severe weather conditions buffeting the Lakeland region. With driving rain and fog there was a real danger that traffic could indeed collide with any stationary traffic. With warning triangles placed, flourescent gillet donned and Paramo gear keeping me dry I think I found my new vocation in life! Sarah and Terry from Windermere Police Station were grateful for my help and jump starting one of the patrol cars with my 15 year old Land Rover raised me to profile of road traffic officer!!

 With the advent of a recent poll examining people's favourite lakes proposed by David Dimmock, I thought it a good prompt to review an excellent book portraying charts of the English Lakes. Remarkably, despite the name, most books on our beloved district encompass the high fells and walking. However, John Wilson Parker has gone some way to correct the balance with this excellent atlas. It really is a worthy addition to the shelf... |

 Since the days when people clung onto their Bartholomews' one inch map of the Lake District a decent map of the whole district has not really been available. However, the BMC has recently published its very own map aimed it says for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers. Does this map prove useful or is it not worth the paper it's printed on? Oh! That's the thing, it's not printed on paper....
