Robin Regan On 12 April 2009 Robin Regan became the youngest person to complete the famous Alfred Wainwright round of Lakeland fells. The '214' as it is referred to in walking circles involved the completion of 710 miles of walking and 230000 feet of ascent for young Robin. His first peak, back in 2006 at the age of 2 years and 11 months was the modest Binsey near his Caldbeck home. After a walk over Swinside and Scafell, Robin ticked off Scafell Pike to complete his endeavour at the age of 5! Ellen Regan Robin said, "My favourites were Skiddaw and Crinkle Crags - even though the weather was horrible. One of the worst was Red Screes. Tarn Crag was bad as well. It was so windy, dad's map blew away! I really liked some of the ones with lots of rocks on. I like grassy ones too with a lot of downhill so I can run fast on them. I was really excited when I got to the top of Scafell Pike." This completion continued a family tradition where his two sisters held the title now captured by Robin. In March 2006 Robin's sister Ellen, then aged 9 completed the round and then in April 2007 Kerry completed the 214. In the meantime, two other boys usurped the Regan throne, but now Robin has regained the title for Cumbria! Kerry Regan Whatever your views on this, it seems that the youngsters really do enjoy the experience and hopefully it will instill in them a love of the mountains that will continue for ever. In these days when us boring old adults winge at the thought of millions of youngsters vegetating in front of their Play Stations, Wii or finger tapping their mobiles it's a breath of fresh air to see them enjoying the outdoors. I say three cheers for the Regans and well done. Time for round 2 I suppose! Peaks or PS2? |

This five part series features an hour long documentary of the famous fell walker and guide writer, and four 30 minute programmes with Julia Bradbury walking in AW's footsteps along his favourite walks. Including Haystacks, Blencathra, Castle Crag and the highest English Munro of them all, this is a definite view for anyone interested in AW, the fells or both. |

On one of my trips ‘north’ I had the good fortune to meet one of those people who to me represents the grassroots of the Cumbrian celebratory. Of course, amongst the climbing fraternity, Bill is famous as not only the son of Lakeland pioneer cragsman Jim Birkett, but also as a fine climber and author in his own right. In 2008 this book won best illustration and presentation and was runner-up 'Lakeland Book of the Year'... |
